11 Questions with WILLIAM NELSON. A WILDsound FALL 2008 Feature Screenplay Finalist

1. What is your screenplay about?

Rum runners who take to the skies after wearing out their trail over the Canadian border and nearly killing a guard. But That is only the beginning for these two fun loving guys as they venture into the world of mob controlled speakeasies and bribery influenced revenue agents. When Vic is re-acquainted with his childhood sweetheart, who is a stunt pilot already things begin to really heat up and the flying of by-planes and delivery of moonshine takes a back seat to matters of the heart. This thrilling adventure of early day aviators, big mining money, corruption, murder and romance is going to make a Must See film.

2. Why did you decide to write this screenplay?

I was inspired by the stories my father shared with me throughout my childhood of events which took place in the area near where I grew up.

3. How long have you been writing screenplays?

Since my fire was ignited by a visit from my niece (who just finished War of the Worlds, with Steven Spielberg) in 2005. I picked up a pencil about a week after we finished making a pilot short (Gold Fever, view on youtube) for her and haven't stopped writing since.

I began working on the first of my scripts then but soon after embarked on a project with an actor I met from LA, together we worked on a horror film (I was mostly the ex-producer) and two years later released that film to DVD, Wages of Sin (not my script). The importance of that work to me was in terms of education, regarding legal, and moral approaches to working in the film industry, a priceless experience.

4. What is you all-time favorite film? (name only one)

Lonesome Dove.

5. What artist in the film industry would you love to work with?

Clint Eastwood or Ron Howard

6. How many screenplays have you written?

Eight, six feature pieces and two shorts, which may be viewed on youtube. Look under 'keep off the grass' by Into Deep productions which I wrote, filmed, produced and edited, this is a piece I did to hone my skills as a producer/editor and gain perspective on the requirements of film making.

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

Reconized as a writer with a valuable and passionate contribution to make.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

It is just in there and I pen it out once I have figured where I want to take the reader and how I want to leave them. Sometimes I'll start out not very interested in the thing I'm working on and as the characters develop I become more interested in what is going to happen to them and the story just unfolds.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Film making, underwater filming in particular, I love to work in a deep shipwreck enviroment, there is something special about being down at 180 plus feet that inspires me. I have produced a film documentary called Diving the Nuclear fleet at Bikini Atoll which you can view by going to my web page www.intodeepproductions.com or on youtube under the same name.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?

I like the fact that WILDsound is the kind of Contest that responds to the writer in a short period and that you have the chance to have your work read by real actors on stage.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Be passionate and never give up.
