REVIEW:

The 1980s officially ended in 1992 when the Reagan/Bush administration left office and a governor from Arkansas began the 90s era. The 80s were such a polarizing decade they actually needed that 3 extra years to figure out what it was all about. It was really the decade of the privileged getting the special treatment and the underdogs and the underprivileged attempting to find its way. This Clinton jumped into the big chair and everything changed.

Wayne's World was one of those movies that caused the shift of decades. Yes, it is just a simple movie made strickly to make us laugh as the plot does take a backseat. But if you look closer, this is the movie that set up all of the slacker films that has made people like Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Ben Stiller, Judd Apatow and many more huge Hollywood stars. They are snarky people who are always much less looking than the girl they get, and always have the conventional 80s handsome businessman as their enemy. All the films are really about the Wallstreet worker vs the Wallmart worker and in the land of Hollywood, the blue color slacker always wins. And they win because these people are their audience and these stories are their fantasies.

There wasn't any internet in 1992 so Wayne and Garth's show was on public access. Today they would be your typical YouTube stars. They are cult local celebrities who do their show in Wayne's parents basement and really have no career aspirations or motivation to get out of that basement. They just like doing the show just like all those semi-popular YouTube people who make their videos. But they just have an audience that can't be compared to the corporate mothership companies. Wayne and Garth are tadpoles performing in the giant ocean and really have no idea how the world works. Just like their fans.

But in the world of Hollywood, the underdogs can win in the end and keep their souls intact. Wayne doesn't understand many things when the 80s esque TV producer buys his show (played brilliantly by Rob Lowe). #1 - He bought his show and it's not his anymore. #2 - The sponsors in TV land rule the roost and Wayne must comply to their demands. These points really aren't valid in Wayne's World (sorry about the pun), because it's his world. And people like him and that's all that matter.

Am I reaching a little too far? Isn't this just a silly comedy where they make sarcastic jokes to each other and everyone? Of course is it.

The reason I'm bringing these points up is that Wayne's World was a gigantic hit in 1992. And a surprise hit at that. This was suppose to be just a minor straight to video film that was made during the writer's and star's summer hiatus of their Saturday Night Live gigs. But the studio gave it a theatrical release and all of a sudden everyone between 15-25 was going to see the film.

Wayne's World opened many studio heads eyes very wide. This wasn't the type of film that was supposed to become a #1 box office movie! That was for dramas, horror and action films. It was then in these times that they realized it was the beginning of a new era. And it lead to the rise of Jim Carrey and the many other SNL actors. In 5 years Adam Sandler would be a top Hollywood actor and a major player. Who would of thunk?

And you can credit (or blame) Mike Myers and the gang. They made a movie about the dreams of all the fanboys who lives in their mom's basement. Maybe, just maybe they could get a hot guitar playing Asian chick to be their girlfriend! If Wayne can defeat the smart good-looking guy, maybe they could too!

I was 15 years old when Wayne's World first came out and I must admit I loved the film. There was something extremely charming about these guys. And watching it again 17 years later, I realized that this is just a Judd Apatow film before Judd Apatow existed in pulp-culture. The slacker wins, the slacker wins!. And most of us love when the slacker wins.

Of course in the real world this never happens. But perhaps it really only matters in the movies.
