Vanessa Ruanne Renaissance Woman

I now can add Grip to my resume! I’ve always fancied my self able to do any job in production but since carrying two sandbags is my limit and assembling things without directions are not my specialty I’ve yet to test my Grip skills.

I got hired as a camera operator for http://webridestv.com/When I showed up instead of the Panasonic DVX 100 camera, that I have experience with, I learned we were using the Panasonic P2 http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/P2/ – an HD camera that records to GB cards instead of tape. Quickly I learned the new specifics and luckily most things and the size and weight are the same as the DVX.

Having dodged that bullet I went to help pack us up, when the directed asked me to assemble the camera car mount. He handed me a box, which inside contained some different sized poles and three suction cups – NO DIRECTIONS!

I took a deep breath and slowly puzzled it together; I got it on in time and prayed the rest of the day for it not to fall off and to my relief it didn’t.

It was such a fun day of run and gun, gorilla style shooting. Non-union where everyone is pitching in to help in more areas then their job alone.

The P2 camera makes a great looking picture and I learned some new lighting tricks from the A operator that brought massive improvement to my wedding work.

I’m really enjoying the process of documenting people’s weddings. You learn so much about human behavior observing the different ways that people celebrate together. Aside from challenging my operating and editing skills the days are always peppered with philosophical thoughts about Human nature, family and love.

I am directing a film in August and the story is about a family struggling in addiction and how the death of the father forces them all to come together. I have been exploring how to visually show the theme of the movie that Grief is the same but regret is different.

It’s so exciting to be collaborating with a crew. Designing the lighting and camera plan that will enhance the story. Delving into these characters, who they being discovered by deciding how they decorate their home. The beginning and prep is so fun and creative.

Life has been kind to me and I’m thrilled to be working after the slow start of the year. This weekend I head back home to NY for the Premiere of my documentary Hometown Heroes at the Long Island Film Festival http://www.longislandfilm.com/home.asp

I hope we pack the house!
