REVIEW:

None of us are born heroes. We all begin somewhere. The hands of life will tear us down, trials that we must overcome, but those hands will also mold our fate. But are we meant for saving lives, or were we destined to play the villain? What would our legacy become for this world?

We are far from supermen. Our flaws could bring out the darkness from within, and evil glimmers in the Cheshire Cat grin. Curiosity leads to discovery, and men like Peter Petrelli dare to fly. Opportunity lingers across the web of life, and once entangled, we are caught in the battle between good and evil. And lives cry out to be saved, but will a hero answer?

The essence of humanity and the depth of darkness lies deep within the ink of comic books. The boundary between good and evil wavers because only a few could walk that thin line, but from the ashes do we struggle to rise again, overcoming fear with strength. Origin is the starting point for men and women, who will become so much more, and their legacy will hold this world in its hands. And pages will turn through eternity, capturing our heart and soul on the wings of those ready to fight the monsters that we dare not face ourselves.

The rocking of the train lulled me to sleep, and my eyes began to close upon a normal day. But before sleep could claim me, death crashed across the rail, and chaos spun out into destruction. Everything went dark, but then light penetrated through the void. And my eyes opened, but everything was different. And I found myself as the sole survivor of a horrific tragedy, but how did I survive?

Questions surface over surviving the train wreck, but David Dunn has no answers. He struggles to pull the pieces together, but one man holds the key to his puzzle. Uncertain of his motives, Dunn tries to return to the normal life, but there is no going back. And he has no choice but to accept the help of Elijah Price, a man with dark intentions.

As layers of a normal life fall away, realization sets in, and limits are put to the test. Hope glistens in the eyes of youth, and a hero begins to rise. But with origin comes struggle, and Dunn’s weakness may become his demise. But the hands of those he saved pulls him back from the brink, and the first battle with evil is won. But a nemesis is ready to rise.

Questions over who we are and our reason to exist lies deep in the heart of this motion picture, and its storyline is a true reflection of the mythology of comic books. Through the immense talent of actors such as Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, we are brought face to face with the complexity of life and its struggle for definition, creating the foundation for two characters connected by fate. A powerful, dramatic tale of the search for meaning, the discovery of difference touches the core of humanity, and the parallel between heroes and villains is truly captured in the movie, Unbreakable. And we are left haunted by M. Night Shyamalan’s vision and by brilliantly delivered lines such as, “They call me Mr. Glass.”
