The World is not Enough gets a lot of bad rap. It isn't as well executed all round as Goldeneye and it isn't as entertaining as Tomorrow Never Dies. It lies somewhere in the middle. It is extremely plot heavy and you have to follow more closely to understand what is going on. It is reminiscent of the true life story of Patty Hearst who develops Stockholm Syndrome after she was kidnapped and develops a belief in what her captors are doing and then follows them and becomes a terrorist herself. This is what happens to Elektra King in The World is not Enough. Although she seems like she was bad from the get go. She is extremely manipulative, dangerous and beautiful, making her a great antagonist for Bond to contend with. She uses her wealth and sex at great lengths in the film to make her plan succeed. There is a great scene when Bond questions her and believes that she is lying, but she manages to convince Bond and even the audience to an extent that she would never do the things she has done. I really think Marceau's character brings this film up for me. Elektra is the reason Renard and his terrorist organization are going on to do big things in the terrorist world and Elektra will do anything to protect him. When Bond shoots Elektra, it is a perfect moment, because the audience as well as Bond know that enough is enough and her evil deeds need to come to an end. Even though I like Elektra King a lot I find myself re-watching this film and having a feeling of dejavu. I have seen bad guys use their power before and have people attack them making them look innocent like Elektra does, so when the moment of truth comes, I am not as surprised, which is disappointing. It feels like a recycled idea. Also the Elektra King storyline is so heavy in the film that Robert Carlyle, who is an amazing actor, seems get get washed out. I find myself thinking, “Oh yeah Renard is still doing things that are evil.” As interesting as Elektra is the rest of the movie doesn't balance itself out as well as Goldeneye does.
Another great thing about The World is Not Enough is the opening action sequence that lasts forever. Bond has a great boat chase in the Thames river that is so exciting and. The other action scenes in the film are also pretty good, but they come in droves in between the thick storyline. Denise Richards who is the Bond girl won a Razzie award for worst actress for her role. I would agree that she does not do the job well, she is pretty unbelievable as a nuclear physicist. It is like putting Megan Fox in transformers, just for sex appeal, which I get in a James Bond film, but The World is Not Enough is not the right Bond film to do that when it is more story driven than most other Bond films. As a result Richards did not read that well in the film. As oppose to her being a bad actor. Overall The World is Not Enough is worth watching. It definitely has mixed reactions among friends of mine. It is definitely trying really hard, and things kind of go astray, but there are great moments in the film and interesting ideas going on to make it worthwhile for Bond fans. Just a note that this was Q's last film and now John Cleese is stepping in the role which made me really excited, because Cleese is awesome.
