SYNOPSIS: A lonely boy discovers a mysterious egg that hatches a sea creature of Scottish legend. REVIEW: I'll say right off the bat that the only problem I had with this film was that it reminded me too much of 'Free Willy (1993)', but a much better version of it. 'The Water Horse' is a great movie for both children and adults about a boy who learns to love again because of his relationship with the mysterious creature. This is a family-friendly escapist fare that should enthrall, without insult, fantasy-minded viewers of any age. Set during WWII in 1942 in coastal Scotland, the film keeps the magical/scary setting of it's time and place throughout while also showing the best computer-generated graphics I've ever seen in a movie. Perhaps is was because of the great contrast of watching a real world period piece while witnessing new age technology! I can't think of another film that has done this. The plot thickens when the tiny creature transforms into the magnificant Loch Ness Monster and must be released to sea. Conflict unsues when Los Ness must learn to survive in his new settings while an English Armery unknowingly makes things harder for him/her. I enjoyed the film throughout. Not the best movie I've ever seen and certainly not the worst. Jarring flashbacks scenes really left me scratching my head why they were left in the final cut. 3 stars out of 4.
