So I’ve been thinking about the Watchmen. It has most definitely stayed with me, like bacterial food poisoning returning every 48
hours. I am trying to understand the comic book level appeal for the legions of fans.
There’s a school of thought (including Watchmen creator, Alan Moore) that sees a fascistic undercurrent at play in the world of superheroes -- you know, where one man can save the world by bending it to his will; that whole Superman/Nietzsche/Hitler idea. As members of a rational, democratic society, we really shouldn’t be pulling for them, should we? Especially like the members of the Watchmen troupe who either can’t or won’t help society in its time of need or, worse still, attack and kill a huge portion of the population in a twisted attempt to bring about global world peace.
If superheroes can’t or won’t come to our aid or actually blow up a major metropolitan center to prove a point, then the world doesn’t really need them. In fact, it’s probably better off without them even at its most dystopic worst. A world that doesn’t need superheroes certainly doesn’t need superhero movies.
