SYNOPSIS:
Jerry and George stake out the lobby of an office building to find a woman Jerry met at a party but whose name and phone number he didn't get.
The show, which is now called Seinfeld, starts with Jerry performing standup at a comedy club. He starts out talking about women and how quick they are at writing checks. This would lead you to believe that the show would have something to do with checks somehow. Not true! For some reason they put that little nugget of comedy in the show for reasons we may never know. Because the show is about Jerry's complicated relationship with Elaine, whom we meet for the very first time as they browse through movies in a video store. And within the walls of the video store we are given the vital information about how Jerry and Elaine used to date. Elaine brings up a friend of hers that Jerry met when they were dating and how she is having a birthday party. She wonders if Jerry is interested in going but he is not. Unless! Unless she would accompany him to a wedding later that week.
Cut to the party. Jerry and Elaine arrive and right away Jerry meets an attractive woman. They exchange witty banter but before he could get her name it is time for her to leave. All Jerry has to go by is the name of her place of employment.
Jerry then makes his way home to his apartment, which is different from the pilot, only to find his parents in his fold-away sofa bed. Which in this episode is his only bed because he has to sleep over at Kramer's while the folks are in town. Jerry explains his situation with this woman and that he can’t ask Elaine for her name because it might be weird considering they used to date. Jerry's dad tells Jerry he should stake out her work.
Jerry takes his dad's advice and he and George stakeout the lobby where she works. As they do they put together a plan to say that they are there to meet their friend Art Corvelay. The The show ends with Jerry and Elaine making a pact to talk to each other about boyfriends and girlfriends without getting upset or jealous. woman steps out of the elevator and Jerry moves in. And then in a panicked state of nervousness George, while pretending to be an architect, blurts out the name Art Vandelay. And this becomes the first time out of many we see the Art Vandelay/architect combo used by George.
It’s easy to see that the show is still in the beginning stages of development and still looking for the right combination of characters and sets. This is evident by the fact that even though George, Elaine and Kramer all appear in this episode they don’t ever appear together. Also Jerry’s dad is later played by another actor and the apartment is still not quite right.
But the show is funny regardless… a must see.
