REVIEW: It’s time for me to begin another marathon of ‘Arrested Development’ and I couldn’t be more excited. This time…season two! The first season has left us with some interesting cliffhangers that definitely have me eagerly waiting for what is to come. Where has George gone after fleeing the hospital? What will become of George Michael’s new girlfriend? Will Maeby’s increasing jealousy become obvious or will George Michael remain innocently unaware? Is Oscar really Buster’s father? Will the spark between Oscar and Lucille reignite? What extremes are Tobias and Lindsay willing to reach in order to save their marriage? Will Michael finally decide enough is enough and turn his back on his family for good? Ahh…sounds pretty compelling for a comedy, don’t you think?
This realtor is played by the always hilarious Ed Helms of ‘The Office’ fame and star of the recent box office hit ‘The Hangover’. At this point all he was really known for was being a correspondent on ‘The Daily Show’. He’s not all that funny in this, though. He simply plays a man who is unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time trying to sell a house to a naïve woman. Tobias is usually a character who never fails to disappoint me and he delivers again. After realizing how quickly Lindsay could find a ‘date’, he finds himself to be rather depressed. He sees an advertisement for the Blue Man Group and assumes it is for men who are feeling down. When he goes to the show, he sees it as an acting opportunity and begins to paint himself blue. I absolutely love how the set designers put handprints and what not of blue paint all over the walls and appliances of the model home. It’s a nice touch to this funny storyline.
Meanwhile, Michael really wants to leave his family behind. He’s tired of constantly having to fix everyone else’s problems and never getting a chance to have time for his son. But George Michael disagrees and wants to stay back…he always has wanted to put family first. His family does not believe Michael when he threatens to leave … and we learn why they don’t through many great flashback clips of Michael telling his family he’s leaving, but never does. As we all know from the season one cliffhanger, George is on the run. As we also learned from the first season, George has a twin brother named Oscar. Imagine being the man who looks identical to a man running from the law. We learn how hard it is for him to go out in public…because every time Oscar is anywhere near the police, they tackle him and arrest him because they think he’s George. His face is always priceless…and I love how the last cop always hits him with a club. But every time, once they realize it is Oscar, they release him. Michael is next in line since he is the current president of the Bluth Company and cannot leave the state unless his father is found or he comes up with bail. I like how the tables turn a bit in this episode. We’ve learned all throughout the first season why his family needs him around, but now we finally get to see Michael put into a situation where he is the one needing to ask for help. But he definitely has trouble getting the courage to ask anyone in his family for bail money so he keeps making up reasons for wanting the company checkbook (but can never find it). The end of the episode finds everyone meeting at the hospital to make sure Tobias is okay after getting hit by a car. We once again meet the doctor who seems like he’s telling them bad news, but really isn’t. Last season when he tells them that George is ‘gone’ and they understand that as dead…he really means to say he fled the building. Now with Tobias, he tells the family he ‘looks dead’, but really is just referring to him being extremely blue from the paint. I love it. While at the hospital, Michael realizes he is being too proud and gets ready to ask for money. Except right before he does, everybody else begins to ask him for help so he pretends he never needed them in the first place. Gob has found contracts signed by their father and Saddam Hussein, proving they have worked together. This is the evidence Michael needs to keep from being arrested so Lucille gives him permission to use it since their father seems to be long gone anyway. Turns out he isn’t. George was actually at the hospital, disguised as Oscar, and has now fled and taken the evidence with him. The family learns this when the real Oscar shows up late. Now the police really are going to tackle anyone who looks like George…even if it’s Oscar every time. I hope it is because I find that hilarious. There are a few parts in this episode that have nothing to do with the actual plot yet but lead to some really good laughs. Buster now has a rape horn…and there’s a particular scene where Tobias has it. Michael is ready to say that Tobias is gay, but before he can, Tobias honks the horn to interrupt. There is also a scene where someone is to resemble documentary filmmaker Michael Moore, who ends up convincing Lucille to enlist Buster into the U.S. Army. I love Buster’s explanation to Michael for why he is now a soldier. “Mom signed me up for the Army because the fat man dared her to.” I am by no means a Michael Moore fan so I find this line to be amazing. Imagine Buster Bluth as a soldier in the United States Army. This should lead to some interesting future episodes.
