THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, 1964
Cast: Vincent Price, Franca Bettoia, Emma Danieli, Giacomo Rossi-Stuart, Umberto Raho, Christi Courtland
Robert Morgan (Vincent Price) is the last man on earth, as far as he can tell. A plague killed everyone else on the planet several years ago. He was immune to it, and can only guess why. Vampires that were formerly human attack Morgan's home every night
Morgan's days are spent shoring up his home against the vampire hordes, picking up supplies in the abandoned city, and eliminating his enemies by searching out and destroying the bloodsuckers while they sleep. He maintains mirrors and garlic strands around his house and fashions stakes on his lathe to use on the walking dead. He also conducts experiments on the bacteria that caused this plague in an effort to find a cure.

THE POST-APOCALYPT MOVIE, "THE LAST MAN ON EARTH" WAS THE FIRST FILM ADAPTATION ON RICHARD MATHESON'S BOOK "I AM LEGEND".
Dr. ROBERT MORGAN (VINCENT PRICE) IS THE ONLY SURVIVOR OF A DEVASTATING WORLD-WIDE PLAGUE DUE TO A MYSTERIOUS INMUNITY HE ACQUIRED TO THE BACTERIUM WHILE WORKING IN CENTRAL AMERICA YEARS AGO. HE IS ALL ALONE NOW... OR AS IT SEEMS. AS NIGHT FALLS, PLAGUE VICTIMS ROAM THE STREETS IN SEARCH FOR BLOOD.
THE INTRODUCTION GIVES A GREAT INSIGHT AT HOW DR. ROBERT MORGAN MUST LIVE. DESERTED STREETS, BODIES LYING EVERYWHERE. ALSO, ROBERT'S MONOLOGUE TELLS US HOW THIS LIFE HAS BECOME A ROUTINE, WHERE HE HAS LOST ALL FEAR, AND ALMOST MEANINGLESS.
ONE OF THE PROBLEMS I HAD WITH THIS FILM WERE THE VAMPIRES. THEY DO COVER THE BASICS ON DEFENSE AGAINST A VAMPIRE (GARLIC, WOODEN STAKES, MIRRORS), BUT THERE ATTITUDE WERE NOT OF THOSE OF VAMPIRES. THEY SEEMED MORE AS ZOMBIES. WALKING SLOWLY, RIGID MOVEMENTS. THEY TRAVELED IN PACKS AND IT ONLY NEEDED A SIMPLE PUSH TO GET RID OF THEM. THIS MOVIE INSPIRED GEORGE A. ROMERO TO CREATE HIS MASTERPIECE, "NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD".
THE ACTRESS WHO PLAYED THE WIFE (EMMA DANIELI), DID A REALLY BAD JOB IN THE MOMENTS OF HAPPINESS. SHE LOOKED LIKE THOSE HOME-MADE VIDEOS WHERE YOU COULD CLEARLY SPOT THE FRIENDS WHO HAVEN'T HAD EXPERIENCE BEING IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. BUT, WHEN THE STORY STARTS GETTING SADDER, SHE GAVE SOME GOOD STUFF.
FROM THE FIRST MOMENT THE DOG APPEARS, EVERYTHING BEGINS GETTING FASTER (IN A GOOD WAY). YOU CAN SEE THE HOPE ROBERT HAS IN SEEING ANOTHER LIVING THING.
I WILL TALK ABOUT SOME THINGS THAT HAPPENED AT THE LAST 20 MINUTES OF THE MOVIE. SO, IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT AND YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW SOME SURPRISES OF THE ENDING, YOU COULD STOP READING AND WATCH THE MOVIE.
WHEN RUTH COLLINS (FRANCA BETTOIA) COMES IN PLAY, THE TENSION GROWS AT A GOOD PACE. THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN THESE TWO CHARACTERS FITS PERFECTLY WITH THEIR ACTING. THE TENSION IN WONDERING IF RUTH IS INDEED INFECTED OR NOT WOULD HAVE NOT BEEN CARRIED AS WELL IF IT WASN'T FOR THESE TWO ACTORS.
THE MOVIE HAS A FANTASTIC ENDING. IT IS NOT A TYPICAL HOLLYWOOD ENDING. IT TAKES SOME BIG RISKS AND I LIKED THAT. GIVE IT A WATCH WHEN IT OCCASIONALLY COMES OUT ON T.V.
