SUPERHERO NEWSTHE JOB IS DONE
Precious finishes her theater tour

Week of
March 15 2009

by Precious Chong

The job is done. 41 or something shows. 22 places. A lot of miles, or rather kilometers traveled.

I’m back in Toronto. I got back on Sunday. Now what?

The show in Winnipeg went really well. We had good size houses and lots of funny audience members. The “crazy” show was a Tuesday night on the last week. Just before the show I thought “I wonder how I’m going to do this again? I’ve done it so many times!”. And then some people came in late and were sitting in the front row on the left side. It was too much commotion I just couldn’t ignore them so I said “Hi you didn’t miss much. I’m Haley”. Everyone laughed. And they were a young cute couple and so at one point I talk about how great looking skinny guys are and the girl looks at her guy and I see this and sort of gesture to them like “yeah, exactly”.

So that was funny and so then in scene two I get dressed in my “sexy” dress and as I’m doing it up the zipper breaks. So I ask a man in the front row to zip it, he can’t. So then I go backstage to get “Vera”, my daughter aka stage manager, to zip it. She can’t. So then I come back on stage. And mind you this dress is referred to a lot. So I say “There that looks good. I’ll just keep my coat on all night.” It was so silly.

Oh and it was also this woman’s birthday so she brought about 20 of her girlfriends so when I said the line about the reason men sleep with people they don’t like…”maybe they don’t have enough to think about” which always got a varied response. They absolutely howled. It made me laugh.

It was a fun show. The audience was definitely a part of it. Then the next night these two women were in the third row getting some gum. But it was in one of those packages that you click out of tin foil. You know what I’m talking about. I was tired and it was crazily distracting. People in other rows were glancing back at them. So finally I said “Is there enough for all of us?” And they just stared at me stunned. Then I said, “Did I just say that out loud?” Which got an uncomfortable laugh from the audience. But I felt bad. I was being mean. And they were these cute little old ladies.

Live and learn.

I was also really good about not reading the press, the articles, or the reviews about the show. I used to not care but in the past few years I’ve gotten more sensitive. Who knows why? Also I realized in the big picture I don’t care. It doesn’t add anything to my performance and just makes me neurotic. Especially with a solo show. Too much about me. Or the character I’m playing. So I was really good about that. Then one morning I wake up and see comments about a picture of me on Facebook. I’d just changed my profile picture so I thought it was about that. I didn’t recognize the name but I clicked on the note in my email. “Wow, she looks older than her dad…” At first I was in shcck. What? Why? When? So I click on the picture this comment is referring too. It’s of a picture I took with these young guys up in Churchill. Mind you, it was not good picture of me. I look tired. Whatever. I mean I’m not friends with these guys so maybe they didn’t realize that because they TAGGED me I get to read the comments! Some total stranger (a woman) just randomly said a mean mean thing about me. “Older than her dad!” That means I look older than 71! I know it’s silly and absurd, but boy did it cut me to the quick. I experienced first hand the fact that people talk about celebrities, or in my case celebrity spawn, as if they were not real live human beings. I’m thin skinned. No doubt about it. But really. Why? My worst fears. That I look old. I’m not old. I’m not young but I’m not old. I’m…well…my age. How can that be bad? What am I supposed to look like?

Of course since it got such a reaction out of me then there must be something in it. I mean the character I played mentions her age a lot. Like “he asked me how old I am?” or “Just makes you look kind of old”. So maybe that’s part of it. I mean it’s no secret that my family is slightly obsessed with aging. That my mom, my grandmother, my aunts fight aging with the same degree of skill, disciplane, and concentration of the ancient samurai. Hell I felt like I was getting old when I turned 12 years old not to mention 30 and well by 40. I had so much on my plate last year it was just something to add to the list. My marriage fell apart so what’s turning 40 going to do to me.

Wes heard these young teenage girls talking on the bus. One of them was talking about a friend of hers dating a guy who was 28. “I mean 28 is pretty much 30 and 30 is 40 and 40 is old” the girl states emphatically. But everyone ages. If they are lucky.

Now I’m over it. Pretty much. And I’ve also stopped reading Perez Hilton. Having experienced first hand how much some complete stranger’s comment on a bad picture of me hurt my feelings. I can’t allow myself to enjoy the nasty but funny comments of Perez Hilton. I sound righteous. Maybe I am. But hey, even Lindsay Lohan has feelings too. Right.
