REVIEW: This is definitely one of the better episodes of the second season…possibly of the entire series thus far. As always, Tobias and Buster each have their own amazing storylines that lead to side-splitting laughs. These two are definitely my favorite but the rest of the cast joins in and supplies a few great laughing moments as well. Buster is still dealing with his hook for a hand and is struggling to earn respect from his mother now. He feels he is screwing everything up. Lupe, the housekeeper, feels for Buster and the two of them begin to start a relationship. But when Lucille catches Lupe in bed with Buster, she fires her. This leads to a great moment between Lindsay and Lupe. When Lindsay pulls up to Lupe on the side of the road asking for her to come over to “dustbuster” the house, Lupe says “I don’t dust Buster anymore!” Lindsay then responds with, “Fine, I’ll dustbuster!” Lupe’s face after this is priceless. Clearly, the two women are talking about completely different things but neither have any idea.
Of course Lucille cannot clean the house herself, so she buys a robotic vacuum. Buster is not a fan of this at first because he misses Lupe. I laugh when Buster puts a peanut on the ground to feed the vacuum because he thinks it’s hungry. But in the end, Buster grows fond of the little machine and Lucille winds up finding him in bed with that too. This leads to the best Buster moment of the episode when he says, “What do you expect, mother? I’m half machine! I’m a monster!” Then he begins to demolish his room with his hook. I love how this “I’m a monster!” line carries over from episode to episode and he destroys the house. My other favorite storyline to this episode involves Tobias moving out of the house. Nobody realizes that he is gone except for Lindsay. But when Tobias reaches the point of missing home, he decides to disguise himself as Mrs. Featherbottom, an English housekeeper. It’s a very funny mix between “Mary Poppins” and “Mrs. Doubtfire” as Ron Howard so kindly points out in the narration.
Meanwhile, George Michael is running for student body president. Michael is worried that this could hurt his son’s already low self-esteem so he persuades Gob to help him with some tricky plays to try to win. Of course, Michael should know by now that Gob cannot be trusted with anything. Gob ruins George Michael’s video and embarrasses him in front of the entire school. The video of George Michael imitating “Star Wars” is classic…as well as the home video of Buster reenacting scenes from “Chicago” and “Star Wars” is great as well. It is in the scenes for the next episode that we first find out that Gob is actually Steve Holt’s biological father. There are many jokes that Gob makes throughout the episode about pregnant high school girls and how Steve Holt doesn’t have a father. Karma perhaps? Also, this is a small thing, but I am curious who else notices the small cameo from Phyllis Smith of NBC’s “The Office.” She is one of the people in the office meeting towards the beginning of the episode sitting to the right of Michael. This is before “The Office” began so she was still relatively unknown at that point. But it is cool catching a glimpse of her in her pre-Office days.
