REVIEW:

It’s been over two years since the airing of the season 2 finale of the smartest cartoon put on television. But finally, on May 2nd our cerebellums can once again be exercised by the Freemans.

That is, unless it’s delayed again. First it was announced that it would be “early 2010”, then an official date of March 28th was announced. That date lasted about a week, and was replaced with April 11. Now we have this new date of May 2nd, and honestly, who knows.

But regardless, it will be worth the wait. Based on the cult favorite comic strip, Aaron McGruder’s creation is a necessary check on pop culture. It takes all the inane occurrences that make us scream and twists them in a manner that makes us laugh. It primarily focuses on black culture, but like the comic strip, no one is safe from its satire.

The two main characters are the brothers Huey and Riley. They are polar opposites, and share two very different views of the world. Huey is a pocket-size revolutionary, seeing things like the decadency of hip-hop culture and reality T.V. as evils in society that must be eliminated before true liberation is achieved. Riley, on the other hand, likes the bling-bling. The episodes tend to be from one perspective or the other, and can loosely be categorized as “Riley episodes” and “Huey episodes”.

The show makes one look at the absurdity of some of the things in our society. For example, in one episode, Martin Luther King did not die but rather was just put into a coma and has now woken up after 40 years. He sees what the majority of African Americans have become and what they have contributed to the world around them and it makes the audience member put things in an interesting and condensed perspective. Now, summarized, this sounds very sobering, and it is, but the writers effectively put a level of comedy into the show that makes laughing at ourselves a little easier, though it still hurts the sides.

Season 3 should be more of what we need, a wakeup call. So many topics to cover, so little airtime. So here’s to hoping that the May 2nd date sticks.
