11 Questions with 2010 Screenplay Finalist

TERESA NJOROGE

1. What is your screenplay about?

My screenplay is about the way we humans tend to take for granted the time and blessings we have when we are alive and well. Oftentimes we tend to spend more time and energy focusing on what we think and feel is missing in our lives, contemplating how if we had those things, our lives would somehow be much better. Charlie’s wife does not realize that she no longer exists in this life. She has refused to let go. Thus her spirit has trapped both her and Charlie in a time zone that has made it impossible for the two of them to move on. Perhaps tragically even more so for Charlie who is still alive.

2. Why did should people vote for your 1page script?

My 1page script right away captures the mind of the reader from the onset particularly through the narrative style that I have used. Charlie’s wife, who’s the main character, shares and depicts her situation with us. Although she is in a marriage, she feels lonely and unappreciated, even worse now that it is their anniversary. She tries to attribute that to typical marriage issues. The reader empathizes with her but cannot help and wonder “what’s wrong with this picture or this story”. It is only at the very end that the reader, hopefully, clicks the entire story. Even then, they will still want to go back and read the story so as to pick on the clues of the twist in the story that they might have missed when they were reading the script the first time round.

Shooting this film would give the casting crew and editors an opportunity to portray and showcase their genius by translating this message, as its intended from paper through image to the audience.

3. How long have you been writing screenplays?

I have been actively writing for five years but this is my first shot at putting my work out for public review.

4. What film have you seen the most in your life?

They are quite a number which include Pulp Fiction, Godfather, Unusual Suspects, Matrix, Precious

5. What artist in the industry would you love to work with?

Quentin Tarantino, Lee Daniels, Robert Redford,

6. How many screenplays have you written?

Twelve.

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

In five years, I would like to have achieved a strong attraction to my work, getting the opportunity to work with some of the best screenwriters, directors, producers and actors in the international world of film not to mention also the upcoming vibrant and smart industry entrants.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

I am prolific writer by nature. Sometimes I start off knowing exactly how the story plot will move scene by scene and write accordingly but other times I just let the thoughts flow naturally. Whatever the case, I always keep re-drafting and polishing.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I am passionate about visual and audio creativity in general. From short films to music video, I am constantly checking out the hook, the style, the mode, the flow of the entire product.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?

I have been looking for a channel or platform in which I could have my work seen, assessed (‘peer reviewed’) and possibly showcased and potentially produced. After a very careful research, I came across WILDsound Script Contest and was very impressed by the work they have done and are doing to expose creative material for those who are willing to try. That motivated me to enter the contest and so now, here we are!

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Admittedly writing is both enjoyable but grueling sometimes. Whatever the challenge facing a writer, they must write. They should not procrastinate but rather get on with it. The joy of completing a project is indescribable. They should discuss their ideas with those close to them who care enough to listen and give their genuine comments. I know that I have benefitted several times from them.

Lastly, after going though the demands of thinking, writing, editing, polishing until the “final draft” time, it is only fair that they should allow others with similar interests, professionals or not, to review their work and get constructive criticism.
