REVIEW: “The Sword of Destiny” is a small step backwards from the last episode, but overall still a decent episode. This episode is another particular example of a guest star carrying an episode. It does not need to happen very often in this series since the original cast is so strong, but this episode should be thanking Ben Stiller for his performance otherwise it would not have been near as entertaining. Ben Stiller guest stars at Tony Wonder, a rival magician to Gob. Wonder tends to suddenly gasp in pain and pull a piece of bread out from somewhere under his clothes. Random, I know, but quite hilarious. Gob has recently purchased a sword for a magic trick and wants to get back into the Magician’s Alliance by impressing Tony Wonder. He recruits Buster to help him successfully do this.
During their first performance, Gob accidentally cuts off Buster’s fake hand…and after Buster puts it back on the audience erupts in applause believing the two of them have just accomplished an amazing trick. The second time doesn’t go so well, with Buster accidentally cutting Gob’s fingers off. In the end, Gob’s fingers all are reconnected – even though not quite like one would expect. Ben Stiller seems to always show up when a show is in trouble with ratings. Despite earning rave reviews from critics, “Arrested Development” never successfully found a big audience. It’s a shame because this is such a brilliant show. No stranger to guest starring on shows in trouble, Ben Stiller also appears in one of the last few episodes of “Freaks and Geeks.” Both “Freaks and Geeks” and “Arrested Development” were received so well by critics but failed to bring in ratings. It seems like Ben Stiller did his best to try to be a part of both great shows in an attempt to boost interest.
It’s no big secret that Michael has to be in control of things. He feels he is the only one who can get anything done. When it comes to his family, that’s probably not a bad thing to assume, but from what I’ve seen, most of the other employees at the company seem to have their heads on straight. Michael just doesn’t seem to trust anyone. All of this stress is adding up and he lands in the hospital with pains in his side. I always love it when a character ends up in the hospital because I love the literal doctor…only this time Michael gets a different doctor. We do get a brief appearance by the literal doctor that we all know and love, so that works for me. This new doctor is anxious to become the best doctor in the world. He likes to try new things that have never been done before – like switch the positions of Gob’s index and middle fingers or shorten Michael’s calf muscles to help him jump better. I find this to be funny but would much prefer watching the literal doctor throughout an entire episode than this new guy. In the end, everything turns out okay. Everything Michael is supposed to get done while he is in the hospital gets done for him by others. Life goes on and Michael realizes that he can’t put all the pressure on himself.
