So after the project failed to spring to life at New Line, which was now acquired by Warner Bros, Bill Birch and Geoff Johns have been brought in by the studio to re-write the script (or start from scratch) for director Peter Segal. In my opinion, this a great thing to bring in Geoff Johns. It’s reminiscent of David Goyer working with Chris Nolan on Batman Begins and Dark Knight. A safe and well balanced move by Warner Bros. I’m just happy to see something cooking in the DC kitchen aside from Green Lantern and Jonah Hex at the moment. For those of you who don’t know, Shazam! Is based on the adventures of Captain Marvel. A superhero who is transformed from a young boy named Billy Batson whenever he yells out the word “Shazam” which is an anagram of several mythic gods. Hancock 2 has some ideas kicking around… Peter Berg recently spoke with SciFi wire in which he stated the following: At the end of last year's Hancock, it was revealed that Will Smith's superpowered character was actually an immortal god who became vulnerable only when in the presence of his goddess companion (Charlize Theron). Berg confirmed that a sequel would elaborate on the film's mythology."There might be another god out there," Berg said in an exclusive interview last month in Pasadena, Calif. "Might be another one." If two gods render each other mortal, imagine what kind of wrench a third would throw into the mix. Take that for what you will. You had to see that headline coming. Lionsgate films has purchased Matthew Vaughn’s “Kickass” based on the Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. comic about several fanboys who try to become superheroes in the real world and the ass kickings they incur. It may not be “the Dark Knight” but will definitely be a pioneer film for the genre. No word yet on a release date, but I’d say 2010 is in sights folks. Sony hires Spider-man 5&6 writer What’s that age old expression? Don’t count your chickens before they hatch? Well, that’s what Sony is doing, planning Spider-man 5&6 before Spider-man 4 is even going into production. The studio recently hired James Vanderbilt who wrote the first draft of the script for the fourth installment. David Lindsay-Abaire was brought on board to do a rewrite, and Gary Ross is now rewriting that script. It looks like 5&6 have interconnecting storylines. Sadly, this will suck. No, I’m pretty sure it will. When studio’s figure out that audiences don’t like to be dragged out in 2 movies to see a complete story, I’ll be crowned king of the planet. It works for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, but for some franchises, you just need to do what you need to do in one film and do something brand new in another. Not drag it out forever (Back to the Future, Matrix, Pirates, etc). Christopher McQuarrie has signed on to write the script for 20th Century Fox's Wolverine follow up. He was the writer of The Usual Suspects and also the first draft of the 1st X-men movie. Hugh Jackman also commented on the project letting people know that they’re heading for Japan to follow some of the comic book mythology. Hopefully, with this screenwriter on board, there’s a possibility that we will finally see some of Logan’s “bad side” that makes him so “regretful” and hard edged in the X-men films. Also note – while it’s not officially rumored (go figure there’s an “official” rumor mill nowadays) my fans are claiming that with a reboot of the Superman franchise under way (aka Bryan Singers NON-involvement) and the new screenwriter actually raises fan demand and rumors that Singer will tackle this film. So as I opened this news piece, I’ll end it the same way…..Here’s hoping.
