![]() SUPERHERO NEWSWeek of May 9 2009 by Andrew Kosarko Strong rumors are circulating that Bradley Cooper of Wedding Crashers, He’s Just Not That Into You and the upcoming film; The Hangover, has been cast as Hal Jordan in Martin Campbell’s The Green Lantern. This one didn’t exactly come out of left field, more like first base. Bradley has been a heavy fan favorite to play Zoom in the Flash movie, so it seems he was destined for a comic book movie from the get go. He has a history of playing unlikable characters, however so doing a 360 and playing a good guy may cause fans to have a hard time accepting the casting should it be confirmed. Nathan Fillion still remains the fan favorite for the part with David Boreanez has a strong 2nd contender and Ryan Gosling chomping at their heels. One way or another, it looks like Green Lantern will have a good strong cast of capable some-what unknown names. We’ll keep an eye on this one…. --- Also: Green Lantern as been pushed back to a June 2011 date. This can only be really good. Production delays usually mean bad things, but in this case it gives more time for refinement, accurate casting and plus, it’s a summer blockbuster period. The only bad thing this means is that it’s pretty much a lock now that we’ll have to wait until 2012 for Christopher Nolan’s Batman 3. Ryan Reynolds Deadpool to get his own film… It has been confirmed by the producers of Wolverine that Ryan Reynolds Deadpool character from X-men Origins: Wolverine will be getting his own film. This was always intended and the reason for 2 easter egg scenes after the credits of the film. Deadpool is a fan favorite from the comic books. The character, originally Wade Wilson, is known as “the mercenary with a mouth” who’s loyalty goes out to the highest bidder. After being diagnosed with cancer, Deadpool agrees to undergo an experimental transplant of Wolverine’s regenerative healing ability which ultimately cures him, but riddles his body with tumors. No word yet on if the film will be directly connected to Wolverine or completely re-done, but it has been confirmed that Ryan Reynolds will star. On a personal note, I don’t think many people should “worry” about this film. I believe the character, while being adapted to the X-men *film* universe, will still be loyal to his comic book roots. He’ll have swords, he will talk (how could the producers say “he’s the merc with a mouth” and not? Not to mention his mouth was open again in the easter egg scene) and I’m almost positive he’ll break the 4th wall at least a couple times. Wolverine Sequel Confirmed Hugh Jackman and producers confirmed over the weekend that a Wolverine sequel is already in the works. The film will follow the tease of the other after credit easter egg with Wolverine sitting in an Asian bar “drinking to remember” and will directly follow the story arc from the comics. Fans who may have been disappointed by the first film may be a little more excited as I’m sure their complaints will be addressed by being closer to the comic roots this next go around. While the financial income may make Fox happy, I’m sure support from the fan community and critics would just make them dandy. Marvel aims their start dates… Marvel Films announced this past week that they aim to start filming the Kenneth Branagh directed “Thor” in the first quarter of 2010 and the Joe Johnston directed “Captain America; The first Avenger” is aiming for a production start in Summer 2010. In addition to these announcements, in an interview with Empire magazine, Marvel's President of Production Kevin Feige talked about The Avengers as well: "Zak Penn is already on board The Avengers [as writer] and he's spending a lot of his time looking into what we're doing with Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, seeing how we're tying it all together. And he's beginning to outline the script now – he'll be doing that over the summer.". The Avengers arrives in theaters on May 4, 2012.
