![]() SUPERHERO NEWSWeek of March 22 2009 by Andrew Kosarko Sam Raimi talks Spider-man 4 With the release date of Spider-man 4 announced last week, Sam Raimi has come forward with a few tidbits about the upcoming sequel; 1)They are currently working with the writer to iron out a strong story. Spider-man 4 is slated to hit theaters on May 6, 2011. Thom Creed the Homosexual Superhero Last week in the podcast myself and Matthew discussed the possibility of a gay superhero. For the life of me, I remembered in my fandom that such an entity did exist but could not remember who, what or by who. Well, after digging for a couple minutes I found it. Thom Creed is a fictional superhero who just so happens to be a homosexual. No doubt, as I realize I have already done, he’ll be labeled as a “Gay Superhero” instead of a “Superhero who is gay.” Regardless, the comic entitled “Hero” is by Perry Moore and follows the life of Thom Creed, a kid who’s father is a retired superhero because of some disgrace that fell upon him. Dealing with his own emerging superpowers, his homosexuality coming to the surface as he matures and his father’s overshadowing past, Thom becomes a run away who is forced to deal with the world of heroes and villains and the grey area of personal traits that fall in between. It’s been quiet for some time on this now but it’s been publicly announced that Stan Lee is backing the comic book and producing a show for Showtime under his Pow! Live Action production company with a live action feature to follow at some point. Transformers 3 gears need some smoothing over? Paramount Pictures has announced that Transformers 3 has a set release date for July 1, 2011. The studio was quick to caution that this is not a green light on the project, but simply an announcement of good will. That means we have Thor, Captain America, Spider-man, Transformers, and possibly Batman 3 slated for the summer of 2011. All I can say is 2011 is the year to be a comic book nerd. Expect a lot of hype and quite possibly the greatest comic conventions in 2010 as most of these films will be in production next year. Furthermore Michael Bay has come public to say he needs a year off between giant fighting robots and had agreed with the studio for a July 4, 2012 release. Given Chris Nolan’s “Inception”, it’s still unsure as to when he’ll be able to get around to Batman 3, which means there could be a heavy battle in the summer of 2012. Who will win? My money is always on Batman, but if Transformers got Will Smith (who HAS worked with Michael Bay twice……and aliens….and robots…..and on July 4th) well, then who knows? Iron Man rehearsals begins Jon Favreau has posted via Twitter that rehearsals have started today, Tuesday March 17, 2009 and that the shoot is only 3 weeks away. From that point on it’s a march till next year’s sure to be instant hit – Iron Man 2. The cast at the moment – Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson. Green Lantern to being filming in September Production Weekly is reporting that The Green Lantern will begin filming in September of this year in Australia for a December 2010 release. This is an excellent announcement given that San Diego comic con is coming up in the next few months. Expect to hear full casting by or during the con and quite possibly a panel. Fans will be happy to hear this as GL is one of DC’s biggest superheroes with the potential to be what the new star wars prequels couldn’t. The film will be directed by Martin Campbell who directed Casino Royale, the revamp of the new James Bond series. Casino Royale drew it’s re-start style and approach heavily after the structure of Batman Begins and succeeded. Hopes that a similar approach can be taken with Green Lantern are well supported. So, ABC has decided to follow and combine NBC’s footsteps. Adapting a British comedy (ala the Office) for America and involve some Superheroes (ala Heroes). The show is called “No Heroics” and it follows a group of B-list superheroes in their downtime. At the moment, the show has cast Eliza Coupe, Arielle Kebbel, Paul Campbell…..and…..drum roll please……Freddie Prinz Jr. Yeah, that’s not a misprint according to the Hollywood Reporter. I’m not one to judge something so early, so we’ll see how this one pans out… Stephen Chow drops out of Green Hornet……we mean it this time Word from Seth Rogen is that Stephen Chow has now dropped out of playing Kato at the SXSW this week, saying, “We have no 100% official Kato at this point." It’s well know that Chow was once supposed to direct the film, then lowered to being just Kato, and has no apparently left that as well. Granted, Rogen didn’t site specifics, but he could just mean negotiations are still going on with Chow or others. The Green Hornet will be (at least, right now) directed by Michel Gondry, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad) and star Rogen as the title role. It’s aiming for a June 25th 2010 release right now. But the way this film has been going…..who knows? CLICK HERE and read last week's Superhero News! CLICK HERE and read March 8th Superhero News!
