It’s all official as far as we know. Mickey Rourke will be playing a villain named Whiplash who’s a combination of Crimson Dynamo and “another Russian baddie.” Furthermore, Scarlett Johansson has signed on to play Black Widow who is also a Russian villain, a super spy. Apparently with the main focus being on an Afghanistan setting in the origin, the sequel will be America VS Russia.
Marvel revamps and announces its release slate
Marvel studios has apparently figured out how and, more importantly, when, they’re superhero films will be released. Coming off the heels of DC’s announcement of The Green Lantern, Marvel gave the following release dates;
Iron Man 2 = May 7, 2010 Spider-man 4 = May 6, 2011 Thor = June 17, 2011 The First Avenger: Captain America = July 22, 2011 The Avengers = May 4, 2012
Furthermore, it’s being heavily rumored that Jon Favreau is rushing into production on Iron Man 2 because the studio would like, as would he, for him to direct The Avengers.
Hartnet may be a little Loki….
IESB has come out and claimed that Josh Hartnett may be in the run to play Loki, the brother and villain of Marvel’s Thor. As we found out this week, the film has a release date of June 2011, which may come up again the 3rd Batman film if everything continues on course on that front.
This week, Marvel Studios has stated that they are no longer in interested in making R-rated films. Instead, they would like to make money off 3 factors; toys, video games and merchandise. While I agree that most superhero films should not be rated R, I do feel that pigeon holing themselves may come back and hurt them are their darker comics such as Punisher and Ghost Rider. In fact, the Daredevil Directors cut (which I’ve reviewed) is rated R and is one of the most overlooked Superhero films done to this date. It’s sad to know that in the future, the quality of the films may be compromised so our little brothers can be allowed to watch them too.
Warner Bros start to Wonder
Reports are coming out that Warner Bros and Silver Pictures are now starting to jump on the horse in terms of getting Wonder Woman rolling. With The Green Lantern slated for a December 2010 release, it’s obvious that Wonder Woman is one of DC Comic’s “Big Three” trifecta. Batman and Superman (although a little worse for the wear) are already off and running and Warners could really set the bar in terms of female Superheroes and grab an audience of females that really hasn’t been tapped yet. That being said, I hope they don’t cater to the Twilight fan base and corrupt the great mythology of Wonder Woman. It’s rumored that they are now taking pitches from writers, although, I think the best move they can do is to re-hire Joss Whedon, the greatest male feminist entertainment writer of our generation.
Batman/Superman: Public Enemies to be made into feature film
Bruce Timm and Company have announced their next animated feature film, Batman/Superman: Public Enemies. Based on the successful graphic novel series, the stories put Lex Luthor in the seat of the President. Now armed with the powers of the US government, Luthor turns public opinion against the heroes, forcing them to go up against their own friends and villains while clearing their names.
