The Oscars were held on last Sunday, and while Wanted and Iron Man were nominated, the Dark Knight was the only one to win. The count of 2 awards, Best Sound Editing and Best Supporting Actor – Heath Ledger for the Joker. Otherwise, the academy snubbed the comic book genre left and right.
Green Lantern gets the green light
Warner Brothers announced several release dates for it’s upcoming films this week. December 17, 2010 will be the day the Green Lantern lights up movie screens. Although no casting announcements have been made, it’s been heavily rumored that Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) will direct and Greg Berlanti & Marc Guggenheim (Eli Stone, Brothers and Sisters) and Michael Green (Kings, Heroes, Smallville) have written the screenplay.
Furthermore, the comic book character Jonah Hex will be released on August 6, 2010. It’s been all but officially announced but Josh Brolin is set to play the title character.
Warner Bros commits to Suicide
Warner Brothers has given the green light to adapt the comic book series “Suicide Squad” to a film franchise. The comics are based on supervillains who are recruited by the government to accomplish tasks too dangerous for Superheroes. In other words, think the Mod Squad (so that’s how they got the name……..) with supervillains.
9 times the Fury
It was announced this week, that amidst the rumors of high tensions in negotiations, Samuel L. Jackson has signed on to star in, what has to be a record, 9 Marvel films as the
character Nick Fury. One can assume some of those will be used in Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, but even so…..there’s still 6 more movies of Nick Fury. Even my inner overzealous fanboy is like, “that’s a little too much.”
Michel Gondry in talks to direct Green Hornet
Now that Stephen Chow is no longer attached to direct the project, Michel Gondry is stepping in. Stephen Chow will still remain as Kato and Seth Rogan is The Green Hornet. Gondry added to the announcement, “I'm very excited about 'The Green Hornet' and all that I hope to bring to it. This story has always been close to me and now Seth & Evan have written a script that is both funny and real - the best of both worlds. I cannot wait to further collaborate with them on it."
