Marvel studios has announced that Natalie Portman has been cast as Jane Foster in Kenneth Branagh’s THOR. Portman is the love interest of Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth. The film is slated for release on May 20, 2011 which would continue the setup for Marvel’s Avengers film.
Live Action TMNT Film moving forward…
Not an official release, but it might as well be. A casting call was put out earlier this week for Martial Artists in the Los Angeles area to audition for roles in the film. This normally doesn’t happen until a script is or is near completion. One could naturally assume the call is looking for Footclan soldiers or local hoods. One way or another this film is farther ahead than previously thought.
Nick Cage hopes to shake up Ghost Rider in another film…
A dangerous precident as been set in comic book films. If at first you don’t succeed, reboot reboot again… And so is the case with Ghost Rider. Nick Cage hopes to make Ghost Rider less of a “western” style film in a sequel and more of an “international” film according to MTV’s Splashpage. In my honest opinion, this franchise needs to tread carefully. There’s not going to be such huge support for a sequel from the same team as the first film. While Cage may love the comic, I’m not sure he and Mark Steven Johnson “get” what the fans want from this franchise.
Stephen Chow is Kato no more…
Stephen Chow is officially no longer attached to The Green Hornet in any way whatsoever. Not directing, not writing, not playing Kato. A search has gone out looking for a martial artist to fill the role. One begins to wonder where things fell apart, but while Chow is an amazing martial artist and film maker, it’s best to depart from a film before the ball is rolling too fast. Once you’re strapped in, if you’re not in it for the long haul, disaster can strike a film…..success wise that is. Seth Rogan is still attached to star as Green Hornet and Michel Gondry will direct.
Robert DiNiro cast as the evil senator in Machete?
I know this doesn’t fall under “Superhero” or even Comic book news, but I like to think those who read this page fall into fanboy culture, and many are big time Rodriguez / Tarantino fans. Blood-disgusting.com is reporting that Robert DeNiro has been cast as the evil senator in Rodriguez’s Machete starring fan favorite Danny Trejo as the blade murdering revenge-man. It’s also being said that Jonah Hill, yes, Jonah Hill and Michelle Rodriguez (no relation that I know of) are attached to the film as well. The film caught a wave of fan support from being one of the faux trailers to Rodriguez’s Planet Terror Grindhouse film.
Scream 4 gaining momentum as well…
Again, not a superhero or comic book property, this film franchise has a cult following all it’s own….and yeah, I’m one of the meetings regularly. Scream 4 apparently has signed on Courtney Cox-Arquette and her hubby David Arquette to return. E! Online is reporting that David has spoken of their involvement despite talk that Nev Campbell has turned down the idea of returning, saying he hopes she’ll change her mind. He went on to
mention that Kevin Williamson is writing the script and he hopes Craven will come on to direct. Now the rest that follows is just personal conjecture, but I think this film will be strong and shake things up a bit. Williamson is the creative source for this franchise and wrote the first two films with a commentary on film making and franchise. When Williamson left the franchise for the 3rd film, it lost a special quality that attracted audiences beyond the mystery aspect of the murders. With Williamson returning I believe the heart of the franchise will start beating again – and my *guess* is that the film will speak on something we mentioned earlier:
Restarts/Remakes/Reboots. Something that plagues the horror genre just as much as the comic book genre. Time will tell I guess.
