RYAN REYNOLDS GREEN LANTERNSUPERHERO NEWS
Week of
July 11 2009

by Andrew Kosarko

Let me preface this week’s news with a notice to my fellow fanboys; Shut up and listen before you start mouthing off…

SUPERHERO EMERGENCY NEWS

Ryan Reynolds is Hal Jordan! Aka Green Lantern!

I'm jaw dropped and flabbergasted. Literally. I never would have thought in a million billion years that Reynolds would stand up Marvel on the Deadpool movie, but that's what it looks like is going to happen. I never thought in a million billion years that DC / Warner Bros would cast Reynolds as anyone other than Wally West / The Flash. But it looks like I was way off. Now granted, this source is Variety, a top film news magazine, so for me to call B.S. on this would be insane. The odds are definitely stacked against me.

But, however, we have not gotten "official" confirmation from Warner Brothers yet. So Don't cash in all your chips just yet. It's pretty much a given that he has the part, but there's still a very slight slim chance that he won't actually be cast. For my take on Reynolds choice to jump ship from Marvel to DC, how this will affect the Deadpool movie and other things - be sure to listen in to the Superhero Podcast this week.

Oh and PS: If you're going to Comic Con this year...yeah, you'd be well expected to find out more about this.

Superman 2012

Take it to the bank folks, we’ll see a new Superman film by 2012. No, I have no inside source on this one, but WB / DC comics won a lawsuit from the heirs of Superman co-creator Jerome Siegel. However, a stipulation in the win, was that if a feature film on Superman is not produced by 2012, then Jerome Siegel’s estate is entitled to damages. Which pretty much means, WB has their backs against a wall; Make Superman…or pay money. After the Watchman issues, I’m thinking WB needs to hire a brand new legal department.

Gary Ross taking a re-write on Spider-man 4

Gary Ross, director of Seabiscuit and Pleasantville, has come aboard Spider-man 4 to do re-writes. The Spider-man 4 script was originally written by James Vanderbilt, and then rewritten by David Lindsay-Abaire. Something tells me we should start getting worried about this one. I had hoped after Spider-man 3 everything could be handled the way Spider-man 1 & 2 were…..let’s just hope this was something in McGuire’s contract.

Cameron Diaz may join the Green Hornet cast…

Entertainment Weekly is rumoring that Cameron Diaz may be joining the Green Hornet Cast as the female lead. What is with Seth Rogan and blondes? Katherine Heigl, Anna Faris and now Diaz? Lucky bastard. Too bad, Diaz really hasn’t been all that sexy since she was in an unrecognized comic book movie – The Mask.

Bow down to Deacon Frost baby

Stephen Norrington and Stephen Dorff are apparently teaming up again to give an origin story to Deacon Frost, the main villain in the original Blade film. If you ask me, not only was the first Blade absolultley incredible, but Doff held his own against Snipes and created a memorable villain. This could be very interesting, seeing as Blade really started off the Superhero fad (not Spider-man as many would think) and that his villain could be the sleeper starter of the villain franchises. Time will tell on this one.

And lastly a word from your self proclaimed fanboy representative….

Guys (and gals) = Let’s stop buying into stereotypes. I realize a good chunk of us don’t fall into the fanboy nitpick circle, but a lot of us still do. Or we find ourselves succumbing to this feeling of super-egotism that we are so much greater than all normies because we read the comic books before they were movies (Black Mask for Batman 3!…..spare me). Let’s start acknowledging that maybe people were just unexposed to comics before the films, and the movies are more of a bridge to help people understand our geekyness. Fanboyism itself has become a culture. And like any culture, American, French, Afican American, Indian – whatever, there are lots of negative stereotypes that come along with them. Let’s start taking showers, move into our own apartments, go on dates, take a day or too off from blogging our thoughts…or…the most difficult tasks for all of us….agree to disagree and cool our jets. Let’s be humble, own up to our faults, and try and fix them. Bitching about Deadpool or Transformers 2 may make you feel better temporarily feel better, but you’re not changing anything without a level head. Let’s start bringing well balanced and thought out arguments to the table, supported by efficient evidence. We shouldn’t sit back and watch normies and Hollywood walk all over our favorite characters, but nit picking and flaming will only destroy more bridges. Let’s try and not let our passions get the best of us. Let’s man up for once. Suck up the perils, and smile at the peaks, and as good old Michael Jackson once advised, start with that man in the mirror. [/cheesy Jerry Springer-esque speech]
