Movie Review
Directed by Craig Mazin
Starring Drake Bell and Sara Paxton
Review by Eli Manning

SYNOPSIS:

A send-up of superhero films, from Batman Begins to Fantastic Four. The greatest Superhero movie of all time! (not counting all the others)

REVIEW:

Some would call this film a satire, others a parody, of the Superhero film genre. Superhero movie fans are a hardcore bunch so they have to tread their water close to the surface in worry of offending people and the films they love. And I think this reason alone is why it just wasn't as funny as it could be.

If you go on YouTube or Myspace, you will find funnier films that parody Batman, X-Men and Spiderman as this film does. There isn't anything you haven't seen before and really a very long 85 minute film.

There's something interesting about the parody films that come out these days. If you go back and watch the Naked Gun or Airplane! series, those films are still funny and stand the test of time. Those films too are parodying a genre, but you don't really have to know what the genre of movie is they are spoofing because a funny bit is a funny bit. Just like the Family Guy T.V. show as probably 80% of their parodies are for people born earlier than 1975. But it's still funny for people because funny is funny! But you wonder why they don't do this in this particular film or last month's Meet the Spartans.

Also, one of the rules of comedy is to always finish each scene with the funniest bit so you leave feeling the most satisfied. This film has some funny bits but they really don't leave the bit at its highest point -- so you're left feeling a bit deflated throughout.

Perhaps the funniest part of this film was when they were parodying the X-men movie. A lot of great elements to make fun of in this franchise and I was left wondering why they didn't lead the film with it instead of the Spiderman series. Perhaps because Spiderman was more popular. But there really is only so much fun you can make of that movie with boring Peter Parker, Mary Jane and the usual antagonist. With X-Men you have loads of superheroes and supervillans!

A film that will be watched by many, laughed by some and then forgotten three months later when the next parody film is shown to us. I'm waiting for another Naked Gun and Airplane!, and they are just not coming.

1 1/2 stars out of 4.
