An ironic horror vignette within a vignette, spoofing the genre
2. Why did you decide to write this screenplay?
The key image came to me in a dream. For the rest of the night I was trying to go back to sleep to finish the dream, while also trying to stay awake so I wouldn’t forget it. Sleeping or waking, I finished it in my head and wrote it down when I got up.
3. How long have you been writing screenplays?
This is my first.
4. What is you all-time favorite film? (name only one)
SCARCE, because it was the first feature in which I received top billing as an actor. The premiere at the Bloor Cinema was the greatest night of my life that didn’t involve sex. 5. What artist in the film industry would you love to work with?
Almost anyone who would hire me
6. How many screenplays have you written?
Short answer: See #3
Long answer: I took a playwriting course in college. There was a workshop production of a one-act play I wrote. I resolved never again to let someone else destroy something I’d written. It took a long time to break that resolution.
7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?
Still alive and functioning, hopefully traveling to interesting locations
8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?
Most of my writing is in my “day job” as a film critic. The sooner I write up a film after I see it, the faster it goes; but I’m easily distracted. Deadlines help. Basically I sit down at the computer, check email, Facebook, MySpace and a few other networking sites; look to see what’s on TV; check craigslist for jobs; break for a snack; check email again; take a nap…
9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
Life, politics and music, not necessarily in that order
10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound One Page Script Contest?
It was a way of dipping my toe in the water that didn’t require too much commitment. I had an idea for a script a few months ago but forgot it before I got it down. When this dream happened everything came together…like a dream
11. Why should people VOTE for your One Page Screenplay and turn it into a film?
Since it’s visual and effects-driven I’m not sure how well it will come across in a reading, but I know people will love it if it looks on the screen like it does in my head. It’s short and snappy, the ideal viral video.
