After all the epic failures this family endures, it’s not hard to believe that they do not feel the greatest about themselves. The making of the video “Girls with Low Self Esteem,” Gob’s constant failures to live up to George’s expectations, Lucille’s dependency on alcohol, and Buster’s inability to take care of himself are only just a few of the reasons this family has such low self-esteem – but that’s what makes this show so hilarious. I really enjoy Zach Braff in this. I’ve never really gotten into “Scrubs” so this is one of the first times I’ve seen him in anything other than tabloids. He is the creator of “Girls with Low Self-Esteem” (kind of a knock off of Girls Gone Wild and Joe Francis). He spends the majority of the episode arguing with Lindsay over whether or not his videos exploit innocent women. I love the part when he convinces Lindsay’s fellow protestors to take their tops off for a free hat.
The best part of this storyline is when Lindsay attempts to turn things around and start her own video – “Guys with Low Self Esteem.” Tobias eagerly joins in this quest, of course, as he climbs out of the chimney and says it’s great social commentary. Wait…the chimney? I love how this gets no explanation. He’s just sitting in the chimney as if it’s normal. Okay…this is why I love Tobias. Things do not go according to plan for Lindsay when she begins to film her video at the Spring Break celebration. She runs into Phillip Litt (Braff) while he is also filming his video. This is when we find out that Phillip is a never-nude and he and Tobias begin to bond over past never-nude conventions. According to Tobias, dozens of people suffer from this every year…and he has found one of them. I usually don’t enjoy storylines centering on Lucille as much as the others for some reason. I think Jessica Walter is great in this role…I just think her storylines seem to always be very similar. I get a “been there, seen that” feeling a lot of the time during her storylines. But, with all of that said, I can truly say I feel she’s the star of this particular episode. She’s fantastic.
Kitty has kidnapped George and threatens Michael that she will take down the company if Lucille doesn’t meet with her. They meet at a bar…quite the good choice considering where Lucille has been earlier that day. Kitty wants a Bluth child, but George refuses to give into her sexual advances this time around. She knows that Lucille has some of his specimen frozen. They have a drinking match for it – and Lucille wipes the floor clean of Kitty. The scene ends with Lucille standing up saying, “I have to get back to rehab.” It’s just a very funny moment – one of the most (if not THE most) memorable parts of the episode for me. I think it’s incredible that the narrator, Ron Howard, calls the work of the narrator of the documentary on the Bluth family “just pure crap” and “unfocused” all throughout the episode. He ends this episode with, “And that’s how you narrate a story.” I love Ron Howard. Like I’ve said many times before, the Maeby storyline with her working as a film executive still isn’t doing it for me. But what this episode does for Maeby and George Michael is supply a good setup for the season finale. I’m anxious to see what happens next between them now that George Michael has decided to break it off with Ann.
