SYNOPSIS: This situation comedy takes place in New York's City Hall. It centers on Charlie Crawford (replacing Michael J Fox in season 5), the deputy mayor, who has to protect the slightly moronic mayor, Randall Winston from those who want to ruin his political career, and from himself, cause he is constantly making an ass of himself and Charlie has try and make sure that his little escapades are either not mad public or have very little negative effect on the mayor. Helping Charlie is Carter, probably the least quirky member of the mayor's staff and Caitlin Moore. Stuart and Paul are two members of the staff who cause just as much problems. I’m talking about something like making a fresh new start after a heartbreak or ending a relationship that does you no good. The point is, whether you find yourself in a situation like the first one or the second, it’s always hard to come to such conclusion.
Some people have the same problem but in different circumstances; like choosing a new food instead of the old one or changing the apartment, job, school or even a simple TV program. I’m not proud to admit it but I kind of dealt with the later one (of course it’s about Spin City). Now don’t get me wrong, I didn’t want to stop watching it, but I had difficulty at adapting to the new character: the new Deputy Mayor, Charlie Crawford played by Charlie Sheen. No doubt about it, Sheen is indeed a great actor but I only found out after I saw the 5th season of Spin City. He pretty much did the same thing that Michael J. Fox’s character (Mike) did. First of all, he did his job as the new Deputy Mayor. Of course, when he appeared, he had to harmonize with everyone, starting with the Mayor.
At the very start of the 1st episode, “Hello Charlie”, Charlie spends his first day in the office as the Deputy Mayor while the Mayor has trouble adjusting to the office without Mike. The guys at first keep their distance only to later become more open with Charlie and invite him to play poker at the 13th episode “The Gambler” He then continued having frictions with Caitlin that varied from work to romance. We can notice these behaviors at the 3rd episode “The Spanish Prisoner” where the media finds out that Charlie is taking a Spanish course, thanks to Caitlin’s meddling. Later he tries to prove to Caitlin that his girlfriend isn’t dumb and ends at the 21st episode “Brotherly Love” when Charlie attempts to interfere with Caitlin and Tim’s blossoming relationship.
Charlie himself had a few issues at the office which, eventually end up in a good way. It all starts at the 8th episode “All the Wrong Moves”, when an overworked Charlie causes problems after beating the Mayor at racquetball. Later, he clashes with the Mayor’s new girlfriend over who should write an upcoming speech. At the 17th episode “Rain on My Charades”, Charlie realizes he is ready for a committed relationship and later dates a mentally unstable woman (Vanessa Marcil) to save face in front of Caitlin and her new boyfriend. At the 22nd episode “a Shot in the Dark”, while on a police drive along, Charlie is shot. Our old friends from other seasons, Paul, Carter, Stuart and the Mayor never fail to turn a frown into a smile with their bizarre yet funny choices they make.
Let’s start with Paul. His 5th season was a little more painful as a result of his separation with Claudia. At the 6th episode “Balloons over Broadway”, Paul convinces his mother that he is dating Caitlin so she will not be upset that his wife left him. Later on, he has to find a new place after his ex-wife kicks him out so he decides to move into a dorm. Except his personal life, we can see Paul engaging around the office when he struggles to find the best joke for the Mayor’s Christmas card. At the 7th episode “Lost and Found” Paul, along with Stuart and Carter compete for a trip to New Orleans with the Mayor.
Since we already mentioned Carter and Stuart, it is best to continue with their part that made this season so worth-watching. Carter and Stuart start this season by dealing with a bike messenger who keeps stealing their parking spot. Talking about them individually, Stuart hires an actor to go out with Carter. At the 9th episode “The Burgers of Wrath”, Stuart tries to impress the new secretary by posing as a biker. Meanwhile, Carter’s behavior at a press conference results with the Mayor working a shift at a fast food restaurant. Later on, Carter hires his sister to work at City Hall and will go any length to avoid people discovering their connection. The 22nd episode “A Shot in the Dark (1)” marks the end of this season for our roommates when their friendship is seen in a different light.
The Mayor is just as hilarious as any other season. He always seems to find himself in situations that one wouldn’t know what to do but laugh. The 5th season starts for the Mayor when his dentist dies in the middle on a procedure at the 2nd episode “Smile”. This episode also marks the first appearance of Angie, the new assistant played by Lana Parrilla. Later on, the Mayor makes a ride on the NYC Subway to prove its safety and efficiency; it breaks down making Charlie to be late for an important date. At the 19th episode “Minor League”, the Mayor receives a death threat in the mail from an unlikely source. One episode later, the media’s reaction to the Mayor’s ex-wife tell-all book, leads to humiliation.
This is all for season 5, my friends. I hope you enjoy Spin City as much as I do…and always remember; when it comes to start something new, even though you are not sure, give it a try; you’ll never know! “Never judge a book by its cover”.
Enjoy Spin City!
