SYNOPSIS: This situation comedy takes place in New York's City Hall. It centers on Mike Flaherty, the deputy mayor, who has to protect the slightly moronic mayor, Randall Winston from those who want to ruin his political career, and from himself, cause he is constantly making an ass of himself and Mike has try and make sure that his little escapades are either not mad public or have very little negative effect on the mayor. Helping Mike is Carter, probably the least quirky member of the mayor's staff and Nikki and James. Stuart and Paul are two members of the staff who cause just as much problems. In 2000, as his symptoms worsened, Fox announced that he was leaving the show at the end of the season to spend more time with his family and raise money for awareness of and research into Parkinson’s”. This is what I found out when I got the news that our marvelous Michael J. Fox will not be part of Spin City after the 4th season. I always believed that the success of a TV show is determined by the work of the cast; Spin City along with its cast makes no exception. Fox has the merits, he’s ‘guilty’ for making Spin City an astounding sitcom. “Guilty as charged” he would reply with a smile on his face. So while he’s present at the 4th and his last season, let me remind you his wonderful ability to make others laugh. Let’s start with the very 1st episode with him trying to remember what happened between him and Heidi Klum. At the same time, Mike has to find a Senate campaign manager for the Mayor. This episode marks the first appearance of Heather Locklear as Caitlin Moore. After being hired as the campaign manager, Caitlin fires James as the speech writer and takes over Paul’s office. Still desperately trying to get back with Nikki, Mike tricks her into couple’s therapy session. After all the conflicts between Caitlin and Mike, such as causing the Mayor to drop out of the Senate race and accidentally getting towed the Mayor’s classic 1966 Ford Mustang, they discover that their relationship other than a simple rivalry, is also more than platonic.
This leads us at the 12th episode “My dinner with Caitlin (a.k.a. Christmas 1999)”. Mike throws a Christmas party and invites Caitlin, then cancels the party so that he can be alone with her. But Caitlin shows up with her own date, so Mike has to get some guests. Trying to find a way to get over his crush on Caitlin, Mike makes a date with another woman: Caitlin’s sister (Christine Taylor). It even gets more striking when Mike needs to hire a director to film the Mayor’s newest Senate commercial and ends up hiring Caitlin’s ex-husband.
At the 21st episode “Don’t Get on the Bus”, Mike learns that Caitlin and her ex are getting re-married, so he hits him with the Mayor’s tour bus. To show his romantic side and fight for what he wants, Mike flies to Paris to stop Caitlin from getting re-married. While he achieves to convince Caitlin to stay with him, he has to show her that their relationship is more than physical.
The last episode also marks the last appearances of James, Nikki and Janelle. So let’s go back and remind their contribute to this timeless classic.
After being fired, James regains his speech writing duties and hires Deirdre to be Mike’s new secretary. At the 19 episode “Uneasy Rider”, he thinks that Caitlin is attracted to him. Mike forces James to enter a pig contest while a few episodes earlier, Nikki and Janelle protect Sparky the turkey from James’s evil clutches.
Four of the cast members that continue appearing at the other seasons are Stuart, Carter, Paul and the Mayor. Stuart starts by wanting to join a gay gym. He later goes back to Deirdre. Our roommates, Carter and Stuart blackmail Caitlin. Carter enlists Stuart to help him bust a discriminating landlord by posing as a couple. After being nominated for “Activist of the Year”, Carter begins to feel unworthy of the award while at the same episode; Mike interrupts an interview that results in a homosexual newspaper printing that he and the Mayor are an item. Later on, Carter gets upset that the office staff is using Paul’s “Magic 8 Ball” instead of his advice.
As for Paul, well, he’s… Paul. After being mocked by Stuart, Paul unites his forces with James to wage a practical joke war against Stuart. At the 8th episode “How to bury a Millionaire”, Paul appears on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Later on, he opens a politically themed restaurant. After having a nasty rash, Paul becomes addicted to using makeup. James is not the only one who thinks that Caitlin is hitting on him. Guess what; Paul does too. Noticing the way Carter is treated; Paul and James try to look like him in attempt to be treated smarter around the office.
And let’s not forget about the Mayor whose constant faux pas can make even the most serious man smile. The Mayor starts by cheating at golf. A few episodes later, he falls down a rescue shaft during a rescue attempt of a baby trapped in a well. Our Mayor’s smile turns into a frown when his father dies. At the 22nd episode “Airplane”, the Mayor wants to show his firmness by trying to change a light bulb in his office.
Season 4, as any other season of Spin City, is filled with comical circumstances that never lack excellent humor and it’s always worth watching.
My friends, let’s say goodbye to Mike and welcome the new Deputy Mayor.
We’ll miss you Michael!
