Khala was beside him in a moment, probably had begun moving as soon as Kit had appeared, but time was moving strangely right then.

She put her arm around Al, a cold touch. "What was that all about?" she said, tightly.

And while Al tried to phrase a reply that would encompass the feeling Kit had given him, of infinity, of infinite possibilities and potentials for anyone willing to throw everything else away, she continued, "What is it between you two anyway?"

And because something truly spectacular and wonderful was slipping away from him, like the sense of a dream, because he was stirred by a profound sense of loss, he could only reply miserably:

"Nothing. We're just friends."
