SYNOPSIS:

Civilization has been destroyed by war and pollution, but the survivors have built the last city of Ecoban. As most natural resources have been exhausted, Ecoban is powered by pollution. The citizens of Ecoban need to continue creating this pollution leading them into conflict with the inhabitants of Marr while one man just wants to clear away the clouds and see the sky.

REVIEW:

While many Manga films pride themselves on intricate, complicated narratives that take reference from science, ancient literature and beyond. Here though, Sky Blue employs a thinly veiled reference to current affairs regarding climate change and puts its emphasis on creating truly sublime imagery and art work.

The Manga genre itself is easily distinguished with its abstract, fantasy influenced landscapes and western influenced characters all brought together with an almost child-like animation that acts as the alluring contradiction of youthful animation portraying adult themes, here Sky Blue does that expertly with added considerable depth perhaps due to the recentness of its production, where early predecessors in the genre may have been limited technologically to create such detailed, majestic worlds.

The world Sky Blue is set in is one of destitution and desperation. The world has been ravaged by war and pollution. As the human race has fought extinction a band of people have created the last city of Ecoban. It is a city powered by pollution itself, a novel and ingenious idea given the dire circumstances, however pollution itself is a limited resource and by continually polluting the planet only perpetuates the situation. Through this polluting action in order to maintain the seemingly idyllic situation of Ecoban, city officials come into conflict with another settlement Marr.
