A love triangle is brewing among Rachel, Finn and Quinn, while Will and Emma share a tender moment. The second episode is a solid, if not, well down follow up to first with evenly balanced scenes of comedy and drama. Glee is becoming one of those shows in which critics are forced to use words such as funny, brilliant, witty, and a must see.
Like most high school related shows or films, romance is sure to be discussed and “Showmance” is filled with love triangles for various characters. Rachel has a crush on Finn, the popular jock. Unfortunately Finn is dating Quinn, who constantly teases Rachel for her quirky behavior. Another relationship that parallels the young trio is that of Will, Emma and Terri. Although Will is committed to his marriage, that doesn’t stop him from longing stares with Emma who has strong feelings for the Spanish teacher.
Honestly, some of the best scenes come from Emma and Sue. Jane Lynch’s comedic timing is perfect and she gives some of the best one liners, “That was the most offensive thing I’ve seen in 20 years of teaching, and that includes an elementary-school production of ‘Hair.” I mean to say Lynch is a joy is an understatement because without her the show would not be as compelling.
The only downside however is the pregnancy storyline which is a little strange and poorly conceived. Terri thought she was pregnant but discovered that she was suffering from hysterical pregnancy. She lies to Will and says they are having a son. At some point Will is going to learn the truth, if not from her telling him, then by her lack of increasing belly size. So the idea that she can get away with this seems silly.
But still the episode was great. The dance numbers which consisted of Rachel singing a wonderful song from Rihanna called “Take a Bow” made for one of the best performances of the series. Take a look if you haven’t seen it yet. Also the touching moment between Will and Emma is without a doubt the highlight of the episode. Their relationship by far is the most captivating to watch. It will be interesting to see how the love triangle among Will, Emma, and Terri will play out. Showmance, while not perfect, was a sterling follow up to the Pilot.
