The females considered played roles in films that were released in the United States between October 2008 and October 2009. Candidates were judged on the following criteria: Awesomeness of Film, Awesomeness of Character, and Instances of Actual Screaming. All lucky ladies on the list scored at least a five or more in one of the judging categories. 10. Milla Jovovich – The Perfect Getaway Film: 4 Character: 6 Screamer Rating: 3 Jovovich's general action-based awesomeness as well as her recent nuptials with Resident Evil genius Paul W.S. Anderson, justifies her presence on this list. The movie was just okay. 9. Jennifer Carpenter – Quarantine Film: 6 Character: 4 Screamer Rating: 7 As a reporter trapped in a building with ersatz zombies, Dexter's wife spends more of the film panting heavily than actually screaming. The awesome film concept was tempered by the hand-held, slightly nauseating first person POV camera work. 8. Belen Rueda – El Orfanata (The Orphanage) Film: 8 Character: 8 Screamer Rating: 1 Although Guillermo Del Toro's The Orphanage, is a slightly older film, it made the list because it was not released in the United States until late 2008. Rueda's gorgeous protagonist is competent, though disgustingly obsessed with children. (Be prepared, lots of kids in this one. Hence the title.)
7. Betsy Rue – My Bloody Valentine (3D) Film: 3 Character: 6 Screamer Rating: 8 In a remake of the 1981 classic, Betsy Rue makes this list for being the brightest part of a dull, dull film. She has spark, pizazz, a great set of lungs, and executes a ten minute chase/murder scene clad in nothing but stripper stilettos. 6. Lina Leandersson – Let The Right One In Film: 9 Character: 8 Screamer Rating: 1 Leandersson's vampire inflicts rather than enacts the screaming in this Swedish breakout film. However, her stoicism is enchanting, and the finale 'swimming pool' scene will go down in horror history. 5. Sheri Moon Zombie – Halloween II Film: 5 Character: 6 Screamer Rating: 7 Sheri Moon Zombie is freaking insane, just like her husband. It's a known fact, however, that the brilliantly deranged make the best artists.
Film: 8 Character: 5 Screamer Rating: 6 Rosten's character watches while she gets eaten alive by Nazi Zombies. 'Nuf said. 3. Beatrice Dalle/Alison Paradis – L'Interieur (Inside) Film: 8 Character (s) 8 Screamer Rating 7 Beatrice Dalle and Alison Paradis both gave such amazing performances in French film L'interieur that it was impossible to choose between them. Dalle's La Femme is creepy looking, brilliant and utterly mad. Paradis gets really bloodied up and does A LOT of screaming. Combine them and they make the perfect scream queen. 2.Anna Paquin – True Blood Show: 9 Character: 8 Screamer Rating: 9 TrueBlood is the only small screen adventure appearing on this list - it is campy, gory, scary, sexy and the plotlines are vaguely cinematic. Anna Paquin as Sookie Stackhouse carries the show. She is simultaneously fragile and ferocious. She is passion and primitive power wrapped up in a Southern Belle bow. Her breathy exclamations and frequent bouts of screaming are often irritating, but hey, no one's perfect.
Film: 10 Character: 9 Screamer Rating: 10 Welcome back to horror, Sam Raimi. This summer's Drag Me To Hell was not only a box office grand slam, it also revived child actor Lohman's waning career. As a borderline white trash loans officer, Lohman creates a complex character. She is sweet and likeable but, when cursed by a gypsy she does what she has to do to survive. (Including small animal sacrifice.) She is, in a word, human. She attacks Raimi's often weird ALWAYS gory effects with panache and screams her heart out. All of this makes Alison Lohman 2009's #1 SCREAM QUEEN.
