This episode brings this issue to the forefront as the house begins to fall apart. The drain pipes have not been hooked up (since it’s not a real house) and so everything has just gathered beneath the structure of the home. The living room is now officially sinking. I love how small things keep breaking as members of the family make their way through the living room throughout the episode. The effects of the house really show any time anyone sits down on the couch as the floor seems to sink just a little more each time. As we learned in the previous episode, George Michael now wants to break up with Ann. But in this episode, he struggles with finding the way to do it, especially now that he thinks he’ll get a kiss from her if he helps her protest the new racy film about two cousins falling in love (the American remake of the French film he saw with Maeby last season). We get a great cameo from “Desperate Housewives” creator Mark Cherry with this storyline…and in the end George Michael does not get a kiss from Ann, but a kiss from Maeby. After two seasons of basically drooling after his cousin, George Michael is kissing Maeby.
The Americanized French film and George Michael’s relationship with Maeby definitely draw some parallels to each other – and I enjoy that. I love how Ron Howard emphasizes the fact that George Michael and Maeby might not be related…and also discusses how in order to promote the film about cousins falling in love, the studio had to emphasize the two leads were not actual cousins. Ring a bell? After they kiss, George Michael is relieved that they have not sunk into the depths of hell – only to have the floor basically collapse underneath them. This is a great touch. Buster officially remembers that Oscar is his biological father. He figured this out a while ago, but the trauma from the seal biting his hand off forced him to forget. What reignited that memory? Popcorn, of course. Not just any brand of popcorn…but Pop Secret! Very catchy.
Once again, all the Bluths gather at the courthouse and, once again, they end up wrestling in the front lawn. Michael is fighting Gob because he always screws everything up while Lindsay and Kitty fight over Tobias (what?). George is actually the voice of reason here (or is he?) as he breaks up all of the fighting. He claims to be tired of bringing this family down and that he’s turning himself in. I now want to take some time to discuss just how stupid the cops are on this show. I mean, the show is not a serious show so it really doesn’t matter. It’s just worth mentioning. George has been on the loose for an entire season…and has not even been hiding in a creative place. He’s in an attic. No cop thought of searching the Bluth’s model home? A couple of episodes ago the cops handcuffed Franklin (Gob’s puppet) for thinking it was an aggressive kidnapper. They kept mistaking Oscar for George throughout the beginning of this season…and still can’t tell the two of them apart now that Oscar is the one who has ended up in prison in the surprise twist at the end. This is a really good way to end the season. We temporarily leave the Bluths knowing that Buster has figured out the truth about Oscar, Tobias is going to Las Vegas with Kitty, George Michael and Maeby have locked lips, and George has fled once again leaving Oscar to suffer in prison. These are some nice cliffhangers. I have yet to see the entire third season so I’m really looking forward to busting it out and letting you all know what I think.
