11 Questions with 2010 Screenplay Finalist

Raef Eric Lawson

1. What is your screenplay about?

"Hit & Run".

A hit man, female gambler, and two children are forced to pose as a family in order to avoid the federal agents and trained killers who are hunting them down.

2. Why did you decide to write this screenplay?

I wanted to write a script that was fast-paced, had equally strong male and female leads, and could hold its own against other TV shows.

3. How long have you been writing screenplays?

I've been writing feature-length comedies for over three years now. However lately I'm trying to branch out to not only TV pilot scripts but dramas as well.

4. What is your favorite TV show of all-time?

"Miami Vice". It dictated a decade... and there are many out there who wish it still did.

5. What artist in the film industry would you love to work with?

There are still artists left in this industry?!

But seriously, there are too many to list. I just like working in this industry, so if it happened to be alongside one of my idols, it'd make it that much better.

6. Who was your hero growing up?

People who normally aren't looked up to as heroes.

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

"In a far, far better place, than I have ever known." "Better" as in Los Angeles.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

I wish I could say it's never set and that sometimes I type out my scripts while other times I'll carve them out of stone. However I do have a set routine that always begins with writing an outline which I try to make as short as possible. This way I know where my script will be headed, however there's also room for the characters to make extemporaneous decisions as well, which I believe adds to the realism. From that point I'll move on to my script. It's all downhill from there...

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Nothing.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?

They have a reputation of being tough and providing accurate feedback.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

No. If you're a writer you're most likely crazy and therefore not going to listen to any advice or tips I pass on anyway.
