PROM NIGHT Donna's senior prom is supposed to be the best night of her life, though a sadistic killer from her past has different plans for her and her friends. REVIEW: A PG-13 Horror movie = a very dull film. Is this the end of the Horror genre for awhile? Prom Night is a film that really isn't very good and that's the bottom line. A horror film works best when there is a distinct killer/antagonist that has character and a clear focus -- and this film probably had the lamest villain in the history of villains. What is good about this film is the female lead (Brittany Snow) who really evokes a lot of emotion, pain and suffering out of an otherwise limited screenplay. She makes us truly care about her and what she is forced to go through. And the man who played the detective (Idris Elba), is pretty good too. Out of all the people the killer will eventually kill in the film (it is a horror film!), you really want only these two characters to live. This film will probably be liked my some because it carries all of the plot points a horror movie has (see the Scream films for a step by step analysis). It tempts you for a bit and then shows some fragments of some killings -- but it's a PG-13 film so it doesn't show much. What it lacks is any sort of originality as you can see every step of what will happen for the entire film. Maybe that's a good thing for some as this could be one of the easiest films I've ever seen. No real conflict, no real character development and no thematic of any sort. Just a step by step remake of a film done on a cheap budget and guaranteed to make its money back and then some.A collusion of sorts needs to happen with these film. No one can go see them so they don't make them anymore. The PG horror genre is done like a burnt dinner. Time for Hollywood to come up with something new to jam down our throats. 1/2 stars out of 4!
