The Rose and the Nightingale

by Jen Frankel
Once upon a time
There was a white rose
Who was loved by a nightingale
Day in
Day out
The nightingale would
Sing his most beautiful
Most heartbreaking melodies
Full of wild passion
And devotion
And the praise of perfection
And the rose?
She was not deaf to his call
Why then did she
Remain
White petals closed to hide her face
While the nightingale sang his
Heart out for her?
Because
She would say, when the other roses asked
Some things, no matter how beautiful
Are not meant to be
Shall destroy even as they enthrall

But the nightingale persisted
And sang his love songs
More richly every evening, every night
Breaking the heart of the
Little white rose
And finally transforming her
He sang not of the sun
Of the glory of the day
But of the silver-faced moon
Gloriously blemishing the perfect warm dark
Of the night
Until she threw wide her petals
Drank in the moonlight
And love between rose and nightingale
Was finally consummated
But the white rose
In the wisdom that preceded her folly
Had realized a truth, a truth
Beyond the perfection of
Love and beauty
She said,
Some things are never meant to be
Some things go contrary to nature
And although they are good
They can never be right
The excitement they bring
Hide the danger lurking beneath
And the price must be paid
For the freedom you win

So the love shared by the white rose
And the nightingale
Was sweet and bittersweet
And when it came to its end
There was as much regret that it
Had ever happened as there was
It was over
And the nightingale sang the love of
Another nightingale
And the rose opened her petals
Once again to the sun
(But never again to the moon that
Had overseen her shame)
But the fruit of that strange union
Between flower and bird
Is more miraculous still
Conceived in a moment of splendour
The red rose
Which turns black as it dies
Black as death
To remind us
Roses and mortals alike
That some things, while good,
Can never be right
That some things are never meant to be
That some things are not meant to be
