Peter Brusikiewicz's Weekly Blog - January 23rd

SUN 4:47 AM, NEW YORK CITYM
So it is 4:47am, Sunday morning, and I am buzzed. What a week it has been…..what a week!

Peter Brusikiewicz settles into NYC right away!

I don’t know where to begin…let’s start with the school. I have been to class on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Each day I would have class from 1000am to 830pm. After class, I would usually go to eat or to hang out with classmates. Friday night we went to karaoke. The majority of classmates went, eight in total. Including this one girl, who has gotten my attention…

Peter Brusikiewicz and the Woman

So far, lets see how everything has been going on here with the girls:

1) This one girl was sweet enough to help me hookup my phone at sprint (Because I did not have a social security number, but instead, a Canadian social insurance number, it was difficult to get a 2-year contract). I could have gotten a pay-as-you go phone, but did not want to. So this girl was kind enough to help me for 3 hours to find a company that would take this Canadian onto a plan.

Sprint finally decided to take me, but only if I would put down a 150 dollar deposit. I put it down and I got the phone. A few days later, I went with my friend to Verizon so that she could get a phone. As she was purchasing one, a Verizon dealer came to me and asked me why I was not getting a phone. I told him “I got one with Sprint”. He laughed and said “we offer better dealers”. He checked my social insurance number right away, and within five minutes he said that I did not have to put a safety deposit down.

A couple of days passed and I went to Sprint to cancel my plan and get my 150 dollars back. I felt bad that I cancelled at Sprint after this girl helped me so much. So I told her I would take her out. She gave me her phone number, but it turned out to be a fake phone number! I guess she was upset about me canceling the plan. It’s too bad because she was kind of cute.
2) I have not been getting out much outside of school. But there are a handful of girls in school, which have gotten my attention, including this one… one of the girls from my group of twelve from school. Let me tell you what goes through my head when I see her…. DANGER! DANGER! DANGER! This girl has so much sex appeal. She is a little Italian from near Venice. She has moved to New York a year ago to learn how to speak English. She then decided to take up acting. She ended up in my group. This girl is very extroverted, like most Italians, and she has the sexiest Italian accent. I went to go watch the good shepherd with her (our teacher had a part in this movie). We had a very good time. She had the power to attract. And she did. The following day she also had the power to attract. And so she did…..another classmate. Friday rolled by and, again, she had the power to attract. And she did. So we all went to karaoke. What I mean by SHE HAS THE POWER TO ATTRACT is that she knows how to make a guy feel dam good. She speaks to you in this sexy Italian and grabs you by the arm and she just has so much appeal. It has nothing to do with the way that she looks (she is pretty) but more with the aura that she gives out about being a free spirited, wild girl.

Karaoke was a good night. Once again, the girl with this power to attract, was all over me, and I was all over her, but again, I have to keep in mind that this is ACTING in NEW YORK. People are weird here (which is what I love). I will never know what intention she had behind this. Maybe she was just being overtly friendly. I have been told that girls in acting are dangerous. And so I am learning to stay clear of danger. Although, I do not know how much longer I can sustain it. I have come here to concentrate on the acting. That is the most important thing. When I find myself getting very social, I have to remind myself that I am not here to party…but to LEARN, LEARN, LEARN! I left the parties behind in Toronto.

Peter Brusikiewicz and his Acting Classes

Class has been good so far. I am especially enjoying the Meisner class that I have. We have this teacher, a middle aged Italian lady. She is very elegant and classy. The first day she came into class and she said, “I have studied the Strasberg method and the Stanislavski. I have trained with the best acting coaches in the world, and I think that Meisner is the best technique of all”.

We were doing a few Meisner exercises that are meant to retract natural impulses from within the actor. My classmates and I were not getting it very well so she set out to show us what she means. She took a female classmate and told her to go sit down on the chair and close her eyes. She then got a male volunteer to participate in this exercise. She took the male volunteer, who was named Peter, and whispered in his ear. She then told the female volunteer to yell “Peter, stop it!” whenever she felt that the time was right. Peter waited a while and walked behind the female student. At one point, he went to touch her cleavage. The girl jumped out of her chair and yelled, “Peter stop!” The teacher then looked at the class and said, “You see her react.”? That was a natural reaction, a natural impulse. That is what the Meisner technique is all about. Retrieving these natural and organic reactions! From that point on, it was very clear to all the students as to what was required. We still have a long way to go.

Everything is going smoothly. My building is getting a renovated elevator (right now, we only have one working). The other day I was walking by the elevator lobby, and you had a few people standing by, looking at the new elevator. They were getting a glimpse of this new elevator, and they were in awe. One kid even said “mommy, look at this new amazing elevator”. Personally, the elevator does not look any better then any other elevator that I have ever been in, but around here, it is the talk of the town. My landlord even mentioned it when I came by to look at the apartment a couple of weeks ago. He pointed at it and said, “wait until you see this amazing new elevator that we are getting over here”. I did not care then and I do not care now.

Peter Brusikiewicz and What He is Learning

So far I am loving New York. I am loving the vibe. I am loving the fact that I am meeting everything and everyone new. I am loving the fact that I am here alone. I am loving the fact that I am on a tight budget here, and I can’t go out nor party too much. I am loving the fact that I am living off so little. It is only about me, myself, and I! People warned me that I would be lonely here for the first couple of months, but that is what I wanted from the beginning. I wanted to leave Toronto and go to New York by myself because I wanted to be by myself for a while. So far, I learned how to do my own laundry, and how to make the best French toast. I learned this being here for only a couple of weeks. Imagine what I will know in a year!

I have been discovering and learning a lot of things about myself as well, which was the whole point of me going on this trip alone. One thing that I have become aware of, which I never gave myself enough credit for, is how easily I meet people and make friends. I never took to stop and think about this because I never had a problem with it. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to leave Toronto. To break free from a social life that at times seemed to be a distraction from what I really want to do. But now I learned and I am aware of what must be done. It is okay to have a social life, but make sure that you choose the people who you want to be social with. I love all of my friends back in Toronto. But they never seemed to nurture my creativity. Here, I choose to hangout with people that have passion, drive, and aspirations, for the same things that I do. People from who I can learn from, and listen to, and meanwhile have a good time. People that I have common interests with and who come from all over the world. I am already learning to distinguish people’s behaviors from different cultures. For example, Italian people are very emotional and if they have a bad day, will show it. Korean people, on the other hand, are very reserved and it is hard to read what they feel.

As for why am I so buzzed? I just smoked a little doobie on my balcony. To make a long story short, I got it for free from some stranger at the subway station. Hahaha. Don’t ask why; don’t feel like explaining it right now!

Tomorrow, I have a girl coming over to the apartment. She is going to crash here for a couple of nights until she finds a place to live. Not to worry, I am not going to try anything. She is from France…she is a lesbian… she is very cool. She promised to make dinner for my roommates and me.

Never ever have I thought that my life would lead to this…. Me, living in Spanish Harlem, having a lesbian from France, making dinner for my roommates and me, while I roll a joint of some good weed that was given to me by a stranger on the subway.

Until next time…

Peter Brusikiewicz
