Cast: Ryan O'Neal, Tatum O'Neal, Madeline Kahn, John Hillerman, P.J. Johnson, Jessie Lee Fulton Adapted from the novel, "Addie Pray" (1971) by Joe David Brown, PAPER MOON is the story of Moses Pray and Addie Loggins. With scenery reminiscent of "The Grapes of Wrath," the film is set in the depression-era Midwestern region of the United States. As the movie opens, we see a small group of mourners clustered at a graveside. Among the mourners is Addie, the dead woman's small daughter. Moses Pray -- ostensibly of the "Kansas Bible Company" -- approaches the group, as the service concludes, and two of the elderly women remark that the child bears some resemblance to him and asks if he might be related. "If ever a child needed kin, it's now," one lady says. With no knowledge of who her father is, Addie's only haven is her Aunt's home in St. Joseph, Missouri. REVIEW: Starting out as an actor turned film critic/historian, interviewing the great directors (most notably Orson Welles and Howard Hawks), Peter Bogdanovich decided to try his own hand behind the camera. Though he still directs today, Bogdanovich is mostly known for his 70s classics like The Last Picture Show (1971), What’s Up, Doc? (1972), and the terrific, Paper Moon (1973). Paper Moon remains a beloved classic, making you laugh and gripping your heart all at the same time. Set during the depression, Paper Moon stars real-life father and daughter Ryan and Tatum O’Neal as Moses Pray and Addie Loggins, respectively. When Addie’s mother dies, she has no where to turn but to con man Moses, who pretends to be a relative of Addie’s mom. He agrees to drive the lonely girl to her aunt’s house, while he secretly wants to use her to get more money for himself, including $200 that Addie claims is righteously hers. But Addie isn’t as naïve as Moses thinks and she quickly catches onto his schemes. Between a rock and a hard place, Moses agrees to let Addie help him and the two become the most conniving and cutest con man (and girl) around. However, their plan gets shaken up a bit when Moses starts falling for a woman his own age. Jealous Addie, decides to take matters into her own hands and, using everything she has learned along the way, she plans her own scheme to get back at Moses. Of course, this con man movie wouldn’t be complete without a visit to prison, fast car getaways, some quick thinking, and of course, a moment of truce.
