Born in Austria in 1906, Preminger side-stepped plans to enter law due to his love for theater. He came to the US at the age of thirty, where he prolifically directed both stage and film.
It was the 1944 film-noir Laura which made Preminger’s name in Hollywood, cementing his strong-suit of the mystery genre. He was a preeminent director into the 1960s, nominated for three Director Oscars all told; in later years, Otto’s star was considered faded.
Preminger continued to helm many solid films until a few years before his death in 1986.
