Something I've never told a sole about because it's so embarrassing, I felt that my reputation would be tarnished forever. But now just so I can state my point for the Obsessed film, I will now tell my biggest and darkest secret. I watch Soap Operas! Well I only watch one Soap Opera and that's The Young and the Restless. From age 11 until present day I've been following the war between Jack Abbott and Victor Newman, the romance of Nick and Sharon, Katherine Chancellor's brushes with death over and over again, and the dysfunctional Baldwin family. I've defeated drugs, alcohol, gambling and smoking as major addictions of my life. Addictions that have almost ruined me. But for some reason I can't stop watching Y&R. It's intoxicating. It all started when I scheduled an hour of my day to organize my baseball card collection when I was a kid. From 4:30pm to 5:30pm right before dinner I would make sure my extensive collection was in order and find new ways to show it off. This was because I couldn't watch TV at that time because my two older sisters and mother would watch Young and the Restless. But for some reason I got into the storylines while hearing what was happening in the background in between me scanning Joe Carter's RBI totals or Dave Stieb's ERA. Next thing you know I'm sitting with the three woman in my life watching the show. From one hobby to another. And the irony of course now is that my sister's and mom don't watch the show anymore as they apparently have lives. I'm the last Toffolo standing. So to my point of Obsessed. This is just a story that's been done many times in soap opera land. The only difference is that in TV land they would drag this story along for 5-7 months and fortunately this film version times in just under 2 hours. But this is the exact same story as daytime TV does over and over again. Man is faithful to his wife but gets stalked by an attractive woman who is just obsessed (hence the title) over him for reasons we really can't understand except that he's also good looking (but isn't there many other good looking guys in the world?). She takes things too far so the guy decides to come clean with his wife over the conflict he's having with the girl. But something happens in their own relationship for him to not be totally honest with her. Then the games really begin as the stalker chick goes even more crazy and the guy gets deeper with his wive because he never told her the problem at the beginning. There's nothing else to see in Obsessed besides watching the trailer (see below). You get the same thing minus the film's conclusion. But if you know this cliche storyline, then you know the ending. So is that where we're at now? Taking old soap opera storylines and turning them into films? Watching Obsessed didn't make my happy. That's because I don't get it. What you see is what you get and you are never surprised in this film. There is terrible tracking music throughout, the acting isn't at the standard of most Hollywood films and there is blatant ADR work done. So that tells you that they had to change a lot of the dialogue and/or help strengthen the performances in order for us to buy this film. Obsessed only makes sense in the world of soap opera's. That's why I watch The Young and the Restless. The storylines are so crazy and everyone always marries each other over and over again, you can't take it seriously. But we're suppose to take Obsessed seriously. And that's just nuts!
