TODAY'S POLL: What is the #1 quality of SUCCESS in the Film/TV industry?

helpimageCOMEDIAN GEORGE CARLIN DIES AT 71

George Carlin, the dean of counterculture comedians whose biting insights on life and language were immortalized in his "Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV" routine, died of heart failure Sunday. He was 71.

Carlin went into a Santa Monica hospital Sunday afternoon complaining of chest pain and died later that evening, said his publicist, Jeff Abraham.

Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. It was announced Tuesday that Carlin was being awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Carlin constantly pushed the envelope with his jokes, particularly with the "Seven Words" a routine called "The Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV."

When Carlin uttered all seven at a show in Milwaukee in 1972, he was arrested for disturbing the peace. And when they were played on a New York radio station, they resulted in a Supreme Court ruling in 1978 upholding the government's authority to sanction stations for broadcasting offensive language.

"So my name is a footnote in American legal history, which I'm perversely kind of proud of," he told The Associated Press earlier this year.

Steve Carell's spy comedy Get Smart nabbed the top spot at the box office this weekend with an estimated $39.2 million while Mike Myers' curry-flavored comedy The Love Guru failed to curry favor with audiences, landing in fourth place with $14 million.

Smart based on the popular `60s sitcom starring Don Adams as bumbling agent Maxwell Smart missed out on becoming one of the top 5 TV adaptation openers by that much, as the Mission Impossible trilogy holds three of the top four positions along side this year's Sex and the City, which debuted with a much smarter $57 million in May.

Action-comedy Charlie's Angels rounds out the top five all-time film openers with small screen roots, premiering in 2000 with $40 million. DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda's still kicking it at the number two spot adding $21.7 million to its $156 million total, while last week's top green-earning monster The Incredible Hulk mellowed out a bit this week, dropping 61% to third place with $21.5 million.

The week's biggest loser, however, was former master of spy comedies, Mike Myers, who likely longed for his crushed velvet suit and white cravat this weekend after Love Guru failed to live up to Austin Powers-like numbers.

As for the week's biggest winner? That would be a 10-year-old girl named Kit Kittredge. The All-American Girl, based on the uber-popular dolls of the same name premiered this week in limited release (only five theaters, seriously) and averaged $44,539 per screen. Overall, ticket sales were up nearly 10% this week compared to the same time last year when Steve Carell also sat atop the charts in the biblical comedy Evan Almightly.

Up next week: Pixar's Wall-E blasts into theaters opposite James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie in the sexy-thriller Wanted
