11 Questions with NATALIE WELSH. A WILDsound WINTER 2009 One Page Screenplay Finalist

1. What is your screenplay about?

"The Waitress" is about a woman who will do whatever it takes to provide a better life for her son. It has some light humor, but is ultimately a story about human dignity.

2. Why did you decide to write this screenplay?

This screenplay was actually a fluke. I saw a news report about low income people who live in hotels, vehicles, etc. I was inspired--I just sat down with my laptop and started writing. 3. How long have you been writing screenplays?

I have been writing stories for about fourteen years. I started writing screenplays about three years ago.

4. What is you all-time favorite film? (name only one)

"Raise the Red Lantern" by Zhang Yimou.

5. What artist in the film industry would you love to work with?

Actually, I would love to work with someone who is not yet known to many people in the industry. I would be honored if a great actress named Llyane Stanfield were to take a lead role in one of my films.

6. How many screenplays have you written?

Just one--but I have about three or four that I'm currently working on.

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

Acting, writing, directing...using my art to make a difference in the world.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

Not really. I usually find inspiration, and put pen to paper. Everything else seems to fall into place.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Acting, and directing. I am also passionate about literature, travel, history, and cooking. Human rights are another great passion I have recently become aware of.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?

The concept behind the contest was so unique! Also, I liked the fact that it is open to people all over the world. This contest brings together so many artisits of all different backgrounds.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

I'm sure that all the screenplays that made it to the finals are worthy of being turned into a film. I hope that people will vote for my screenplay because it is entertaining, yet presents many issues that arise in our society
