Music of a Forgotten Master, directed by Jason Bourque

David Nowakowsky (1848-1921) was composer-in-residece at Odessa's Brody Synagogue for over 53 years and a teacher of composition at the Odessa Conservatory.. During that time he wrote over 1,000 works, including Symphonies, Oratorios and Chamber works both secular and sacred. After his death the Bolsheviks seized the synagogue. In 1923 his music was smuggled out of Russia to his Grandaughter Sofie, a rising concert pianist living in Stutgardt Germany. In 1937 Sofie and her familiy became stateless refugees, One-by-one they escaped to Switzerland, after hiding the music on a farm in occupied France. The film is based on a letter that Sofie's husband Boris wrote in 1945, on his return to the farm in Archamps, where he had hidden the crates containing Nowakowsky's unpublished manuscripts.
