Movie Reviews - The Abandoned - Robert's Review

"The Abandoned" is the story of an American woman – who was born in Russia and orphaned as a child – who is searching for her birth parents. She soon learns that her parents are both long dead and that she has inherited her family's house, which happens to be totally secluded out in the middle of nowhere, deep in the forests of a very remote area of Russia. She hires a guide and ventures to her newfound home in search of clues. When she arrives at the house, it's been abandoned and uninhabited for 40 years, so it's in total disrepair. She soon meets a mysterious man who claims to be her twin brother and together, they find out that the house holds many secrets to a past neither of them remember. They are forced to relive a series of horrifying events and shocking murders that occurred shortly after they were born. The house (or perhaps the possessing spirit of the house) remembers everything that took place there. It also remembers that these two twins were supposed to die there as well. So, now that they're back home, it can finally have its wish.

The set designs for "The Abandoned" (i.e. the house and surrounding property) and the cinematography thereof were fantastically creepy and would be absolutely perfect for a much better movie. However, this movie was just terrible. The weak storyline and plot left much to be desired; there was hardly any dialogue throughout the entire movie (in fact, if I were to add it all up, the script couldn't have been more than a few pages) and the plot twists were just confusing. Overall, I am very surprised that "The Abandoned" was wide-released in theaters. But I must congratulate writer/director Nacho Cerda on one thing... the title of the movie is truly prophetic... every theater around this country that's showing this movie will be abandoned... empty theater seats as far as the eye can see. It's rather ironic, yet fitting.

All in all, I'd give this movie 1 STAR (out of 5). Re-watch value: NONE (I'd rather self-induce vomiting than watch this again, EVER).

Movie Reviews - The Abandoned - Brett's Review

"The Abandoned" is a mysterious ghost story about an American film producer named Marie (Anastasia Hille) who returns to her homeland, Russia where her mother's dead body has been found under bizarre circumstances. She never knew her, having been adopted and brought to America as a baby. The only clue as to what might have happened is an isolated, abandoned farm in the mountains that supposedly belong to her natural parents. Being the only next of kin, she inherits the place, however no one will take her there as the local superstitions state that the area is...DAMNED. Only one man will embark on such a dangerous and long journey...A stranger that oddly seems to know quite a bit about her history. Once they arrived the guide mysteriously disappears, forcing Marie to explore the derelict location alone. She discovers someone else on the property...A man named Nikolai (Karel Roden), who claims to have been lured there exactly in the same manner, so he could discover the truth behind his unknown past as well. They become stranded in the immense compound, plagued by terrifying, ghostly visions of THEMSELVES. Dead versions of themselves marauder between the buildings in the night and time begins to move in reverse as history re-lives itself in front of their very eyes. While both their ghosts, illustrating how they will die wander and patiently await their living counterparts to expire. A cycle of horror comes to fruition, as they are revealed the reason they have been summoned for this perverse reunion...And the brutal secret behind their family.

Overall I thought this to be a very slow ghost story; the beginning was so incredibly boring I almost fell asleep. The dialog was almost non existent, and the plot just seemed to drag with no real purpose. I have seen some really good ghost stories, however this one was just not scary, and not entertaining at all. However the cinematography was really nice showing the countryside of Russia, and some nice little houses, but in the end it wasn't enough to offset the boring nature of the movie. "The Abandoned" should have stayed just that…Abandoned on a shelf never to be seen by the audience.Overall Rating: 1 Star (out of 5). Re-Watch Value: None (If you must see it, just rent it).
