When Shrek married Princess Fiona, he never wanted to be king. He's always been happy living in a swamp. However, when King Harold becomes ill, Shrek is now the next in line to run the kingdom of Far Far Away. But no matter how hard he tries, he's just not cut out for being king, so he must find another who can take his place. Fiona's cousin Arthur is the next in line after Shrek, but he's not exactly king material either. He's just a loser in high school and nobody likes him – even the nerds at the school pick on him! It's up to Shrek to bring him back to Far Far Away (by force of necessary) and convince him to be king, so that Shrek can go back to his swamp and live in peace. As usual, he teams up with Donkey and Puss in Boots and together they set off on this journey. Complicating matters even more, Fiona is pregnant and Shrek is fearful about becoming a father. Plus, his old nemesis Price Charming decides to rally all the fairytale villains and take over the kingdom of Far Far Away while Shrek is gone so that he can become king, leaving only Fiona and her band of fairytale princesses to try and stop him.
"Shrek the Third" was an excellent follow-up to the other movies. This entire trilogy has really been great. There are a lot of new jokes in this movie for kids and adults alike, so the whole family can have a great time. The soundtrack is definitely geared towards the adults with songs from the 70's and so on that are used to great comedic effect. I really enjoyed this movie and laughed quite a bit, however it's not quite as funny as the other two movies were. I thought all the voice actors did a fantastic job as usual (even Justin Timberlake who played Arthur) and the animation was on par with how it's always been, which is to say – pretty great! In addition, I thought the pacing was well done and there weren't any slow parts. The 93 minute running time just seemed to fly by. I kind of wish this movie was a bit longer actually – it almost felt like it went by too quickly. Lastly, I think they gave way too much information in the trailers for this movie and when I saw those same scenes on the big screen, they weren't as funny as they would have been if I'd never seen them before. However, those minor nitpickings aside, "Shrek the Third" is a lot of fun and I'd highly recommend it.
All in all, I'd give this movie 4 STARS (out of 5). Re-watch value: HIGH
Brett's Review
"Shrek the Third" picks up where number 2 left off, and with the same humor and scripting it becomes a very funny and magical journey. Being king isn't for everyone--especially if you're a prickly ogre who smells like the shallow end of a swamp. When Shrek married Fiona, the last thing he wanted was to rule Far Far Away, but when his frogger-in-law, King Harold, suddenly croaks, Shrek is quickly fitted for the crown. Now, unless the reluctant would-be king can find a suitable replacement, he'll be royally screwed for the rest of his days. As if Shrek didn't have enough on his plate, Princess Fiona has another little surprise on the way. With his head spinning and his belly in knots, Shrek sets off on a quest to find the only other possible heir to the throne, Fiona's long-lost cousin Artie, an underachieving medieval high schooler. While the ogre is away, his old nemesis Prince Charming rears his handsome head and returns to the kingdom of Far Far Away with redemption on his shallow little mind. Even with Donkey and the ever-so-suave Puss in Boots by their side, it's going to take an ogre-sized effort--and a whole lot of help from Fiona and her band of princesses--for Shrek and Artie to save the day and find their own "Happily Ever After."
I found "Shrek the Third" to complement and bring an excellent ending to the trilogy; it was original, funny, and entertaining for kids and adults. The humor was as to be expected with Shrek, with just the right amount for the adults as well. However the soundtrack is definitely for the adults and this is what I really enjoyed about it. Somehow the producers and director managed to fit some great music into a supposedly "kids movie" and do it very well. The movie as with the other two Shrek films also has a message, about believing in yourself and following your dreams. I really enjoyed "Shrek the 3rd" and thought the 90 min went by very fast.
Overall Rating: 4 Stars (Out of 5). Re-Watch Value: High (I will purchase on DVD).
