Kate Armstrong (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is head chef at an upscale restaurant. Her life is turned upside-down when she must assume guardianship of her niece Zoe (Abigail Breslin) after her sister is killed in a car accident. She now has to adapt to dealing with the pain of losing her sister, the responsibility of caring for Zoe, the pressure of staying head chef at the restaurant, and dealing with a new chef Nick Palmer (Aaron Eckhart) who is filling in while Kate is dealing with everything. Kate believe that Nick is scheming for her head chef position and treats him like a foe – but he could perhaps be a good friend and ally, if she'd just open up to him and give him the benefit of the doubt.
What a breath of fresh air. "No Reservations" is well scripted, well acted, well directed and really well done. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart and Abigail Breslin all give top notch performances that are very emotional and dramatic. The cinematography and the supporting cast were fantastic. The only real downside to this movie is that you end up leaving the theater hungry after seeing all the amazing foods the chefs cook up. This movie doesn't have the KAPOW factor to warrant a full 5-Star rating, but it does come very, very close. Overall, a truly excellent movie with a lot of depth, heart, wit, humor, and an extremely talented cast.
All in all, I'd give this movie 4.5 Truffles (out of 5). Re-watch value: HIGH (next time I'll eat before I go, LOL).
Overall Rating: 4 Truffles (Out of 5). Re-Watch Value: High (A definite purchase for me when DVD arrives.)
Trivia: According to USA Weekend, Catherine Zeta-Jones worked for one evening as a server at Fiamma Osteria in New York in preparation for her role in the movie. When customers remarked on how much their server resembled Catherine Zeta-Jones, she would reply, "I hear that all the time."
