Movie Reviews Nancy Drew - Robert's Review

Based on the popular book series, "Nancy Drew" stars Emma Roberts as the teen sleuth, who's always looking for a mystery to solve. Leaving her home town of River Heights, she moves to Los Angeles with her father for his new job; and though her father wants nothing more than to see her give up sleuthing and become a normal teenaged girl, she just can't seem to break the habit no matter how hard she tries. Their new home is full of mystery, being the former home of a famous actress named Dehlia Draycott who died in this very house due to mysterious circumstances. So, while Nancy's father is away, she's busy trying to solve the mystery and getting herself into all kinds of trouble, plus she's not having much luck fitting in at her new school… those Los Angels teenagers are just so rude to her.

I've never read the "Nancy Drew" books, so I cannot say how well this movie followed the source material. What I can say is that this movie is really geared towards teenaged girls and fans of the books… that's the target audience. If you fall outside that selective group (like me) then this movie doesn't have much to offer. It's not completely terrible, but there wasn't much there to keep me entertained or interested. I'm kind of curious to see what the target audience thinks of this movie. Anyhow, the story was pretty campy, silly and bland, plus the characters all revolved around Nancy like it was her planet and they were all just passing through. Overall, if you're not of the target audience, then it's not really worth seeing this movie. Save your $10.

All in all, I'd give this movie 2 STARS (out of 5). Re-watch value: LOW (if it's on cable and there's nothing else on).

Movie Reviews Nancy Drew - Brett's Review

Nancy Drew, the resourceful teen detective, leaves her friendly hometown of River Heights for the West Coast and enrolls at

Hollywood High School. There, her unique personal style immediately sets her apart from her self-absorbed, fast-living peers, especially reigning fashionistas Inga and Trish, who can't quite figure her out but know that everything about her is different--from her super-smarts and retro manners to her perfect picnic lunches and penny loafers. Their less-than-warm reception might bother the average new girl in town, but not Nancy. She has more important things to think about--namely, a brand new mystery. Even though she promised her worried Dad that she'd quit the "sleuthing" business, it isn't long before Nancy gets a lead on one of the greatest unsolved cases of all time: the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of famous actress Dehlia Draycott. It happens that the Drews are staying in the former Draycott mansion, long reputed to be haunted and now a site where some very strange things have been happening. How could she resist?

Being a fan of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries growing up I was not disappointed with the story or plot of the movie. The movie however does tend to cater toward the pre-teen (10-12) or teenage (13-15) age bracket. The acting was descent but if you consider the main actress Emma Roberts (Julia Roberts's niece) then you wouldn't expect anything less. The movie was entertaining and the story somewhat predictable, but it followed the lines of a good Nancy Drew mystery.

Overall Rating 2.5 Stars (out of 5). Re-Watch Value: Moderate (maybe with my niece).

Trivia: Emma Roberts worked with an on-set etiquette coach for the role.
