Movie Reviews Live Free or Die Hard - Brett's Review
The latest installment of the Die Hard franchise finds us on the July 4th holiday, when an attack on the vulnerable United States infrastructure begins to shut down the entire nation. The mysterious figure behind the scheme has figured out every modern angle -- but he never figured on an old-school "analog" fly in the "digital" ointment: John McClane. No mask. No cape. No problem.
I found this movie to be a good ending on the Die Hard series. John McClane is divorced and his kids don't really want to talk to him, he even makes a reference to being a hero who is put out to pasture. The highlight of the movie for me was the computer genius living in his Mom's basement (aka his "Command Center") named The Warlock (Kevin Smith), who as always was awesome. The new "sidekick" for John is the computer nerd Matt Ferrell (Justin Long) who does a great job of playing side by side with a relic in the computer era. The CGI effects were very well done and there was some cool stuff that wasn't included in all the trailers. Overall I felt this was decently put together movie, the story flowed in a good direction and it was a fun ride all the way to the end.
Overall Rating: 3.5 bullets (out of 5) Re-Watch Value: High (A definite DVD purchase for my collection).
Trivia: (1) The movie's title, "Live Free or Die Hard", is a reference to New Hampshire's State Motto "Live Free or Die". (2) (From the trailer) One of Bruce Willis' lines is "All you have to do is go pick up a kid from Jersey and drive him down to DC, how hard can it be?!" This is a nod to another Willis film 16 Blocks (2006) where the film is based on the same principle. (3) Justin Timberlake was in talks to play John McClane's son.
