Robert's Review I really wanted to like "Hot Fuzz" and I thought it started out great, but then it just went downhill from there. As a parody of all Hollywood action movies, it borrowed all of the worst action movie elements (such as close-range shootouts where nobody can hit each other, cut scenes and camera motion to fake or imitate real action, etc) and just did them over and over and over and over… it was kind of funny at first, but then it got old pretty fast. The entire movie was visually dizzying… camera motion and cut scenes were way, way, WAY over-used. While I chuckled during a couple scenes, the movie really didn't have much comedy in it overall. I found myself pretty bored towards the middle and I'm sorry to say that I actually fell asleep for about 10 minutes. The movie just couldn't hold my interest. It was like watching "Redline" without the eye-candy or the cool cars… but at least this had a plot. I thought Simon Pegg did a fine acting job (and I hope to see him in other, better movies) but overall, "Hot Fuzz" was a snoozer and an eyesore (thanks to the over-usage of cut scenes and camera motion). All in all, I'd give this movie 2 STARS (out of 5). Re-watch value: LOW (it's a Rental or a Cable VOD).Robert's Review From the same guys who brought us "Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz" is a parody of all Hollywood action movies. Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is the finest and most decorated cop in London, having earned numerous commendations and awards in the line of service and racking up an impressive arrest record 400% higher than any other cop in London. He's too good, which therefore makes the other cops look bad, so Angel's superiors give him a promotion and send him away to the town of Sandford – a small, sleepy and nearly crime-free village. He's soon partnered with the Chief Inspector's son Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) who's watched way too many action movies and thinks Angel is a real-life "Bad Boy" because of all the action he's seen in his police career... the shootouts, high-speed pursuits, etc. Angel feels like he's stepped into another world… one where the Sandford cops are complete idiots who aren't doing their jobs. Angel is convinced that there's foul play afoot when several citizens are brutally killed. The other cops just think the deaths are accidents and leave it at that, while Angel digs deeper and deeper to find out who the killer is and bust the case wide open. Brett's Review The creators of "Shaun of the dead" are at it again with the new comedy action movie "Hot Fuzz". Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is the finest cop London has to offer, with an arrest record 400% higher than any other officer on the force. He's so good; he makes everyone else look bad. As a result, Angel's superiors send him to a place where his talents won't be quite so embarrassing -- the sleepy and seemingly crime-free village of Sandford. Once there, he is partnered with the well-meaning but overeager police officer Danny Butterman (Nick Frost). The son of amiable Police Chief Frank Butterman, Danny is a huge action movie fan and believes his new big-city partner might just be a real-life "bad boy," and his chance to experience the life of gunfights and car chases he so longs for. Angel is quick to dismiss this as childish fantasy and Danny's puppy-like enthusiasm only adds to Angel's growing frustration. However, as a series of grisly accidents rocks the village, Angel is convinced that Sandford is not what it seems and as the intrigue deepens, Danny's dreams of explosive, high-octane, car-chasing, gun fighting, all-out action seem more and more like a reality. It's time for these small-town cops to break out some big-city justice. "Hot Fuzz" is a cliché to every action movie ever made, it has the car chases (and crashes), the gun shootouts (every type imaginable), the corrupt government and police force, and every daredevil stunt ever put in any action movie. Personally I thought "Shaun of the dead" was a better movie, however this one did stand on its own merits. The humor was very similar, the style of movie was almost identical, and Frost and Pegg did an outstanding job with the acting. Overall, a pretty descent movie with lots going on and very few slow parts, but one of the things that did tend to get old was the cut scene sequences… after the first few it started to really get boring. Overall Rating: 2.5 Stars (out of 5). Re-Watch Value: Moderate (Rental or Cable). Trivia: The fruit machine appearing in the village pub is the same "Ooh Ah Dracula" fruit machine that appeared in The Winchester in "Shaun of the Dead" (2004).
