Movie Reviews - Bug

Robert's Review

Agnes (Ashley Judd) is a lonely waitress with a tragic past. She lives in a nasty run-down motel, living in fear of her abusive, recently paroled ex-husband (Harry Connick Jr.). Her lesbian co-worker R.C (Lynn Collins) introduces her to some guy she just met… he turns out to be an eccentric, nervous drifter named Peter (Michael Shannon) who thinks people are after him, so he's on the run. He and Agnes begin a tentative romance, which is going really well for them… until the first bugs start to show up. Then the story quickly morphs into a twisted nightmare reality where bugs are living under their skin and eating parts of their flesh. "Bug" is directed by William Friedkin ("The Exorcist") and adapted by Tracy Letts from his hit off-Broadway play.

I really don't know what to say about "Bug." It's a movie that defies categorization – it's all at once a Drama / Horror / Thriller / Dark Comedy, but it's such a strange movie that it somehow becomes something else entirely. It's like a bad drug-induced hallucination. I felt like walking out of the movie about 15 minutes into the story because the plot wasn't going anywhere and I couldn't care less about the stupid characters. It was like watching an episode of "The Real World" combined with an episode of "Jerry Springer" combined with an episode of "The Twilight Zone"… meshing into some kind of 'behind the scenes' look into the lives of some trailer-trash, coked-up, morons who're too crazy and stupid to be left alive. It was grueling having to sit through the entire movie and I couldn't wait for it to be over! The last 15-20 minutes were pretty intense, but it just wasn't entertaining at all. There were about 15 people in the audience with me when I went to see this and their reaction was very similar to mine… a "WTF was that crap???" type of response. Overall, I recommend saving your $10 and if you must see this movie, just rent it instead. It's not worth wasting your money on.

All in all, I'd give this movie 1.5 STARS (out of 5). Re-watch value: NONE
