Movie Reviews - 28 Weeks Later

Robert's Review

"28 Weeks Later" is the sequel to 2002's "28 Days Later." It's been six months since the rage virus spread, annihilating the British Isles. The U.S. Army has declared that the war against this outbreak has been won and that reconstruction of the country can now begin. Soon the first waves of refugees begin to return and start over. However, one person that returns home unknowingly carries the rage virus – but due to her genetics, she shows no outward symptoms – and inadvertently re-ignites the spread of the deadly infection. All the military can do at that point is to try to maintain the quarantine, so everyone must be killed to ensure that the infection ends here.

If you were a fan of "28 Days Later," then you will probably really enjoy this movie too. However, I didn't like the first movie and didn't care much for this one either. The story and the characters failed to draw me into their world… I couldn't feel for them, nor care for them. I felt very detached the entire time. The plot certainly isn't very original (but I can't really hold that against a zombie movie) and the acting was decent I guess (I think they did what they could with the weak script) but it just wasn't interested or engrossing in any way. I have therefore dubbed it "28 Naps Later" because I nearly dozed off about that many times during the movie. I never really understood the appeal of the 1st movie either, but I understand that many horror fans really loved it. So, I'm guessing they will love this one too, even though it didn't do anything for me. Also, I really didn't like all the camera motion during the zombie attack scenes (it was way overused) and honestly, this movie is far too predicable. There's no suspense whatsoever. To top it all off, there are way too many scenes where the characters do really stupid/moronic things. When I went to the press screening, I heard quite a few people in the audience groan and laugh every time a character did something stupid (and it happened all throughout the movie).

All in all, I'd give this movie 1 STAR (out of 5). Re-watch value: NONE (unless I really can't sleep…)

Brett's Review

In "28 Weeks Later" we have seen Britain crumble into chaos and become a dead country; six months have now passed since the rage virus has annihilated the British Isles. The U.S. Army declares that the war against infection has been won, and that the reconstruction of the country can begin. As the first wave of refugees return, a family is reunited--but one of them unwittingly carries a terrible secret. The virus is not yet dead, and this time--showing no outward symptoms--it is more dangerous than ever.

This is the sequel to the hugely popular "28 Days Later" and like most sequels it is never as good as the first one. I found this movie to be kind of boring and very slow in parts. The story tries to pick up where the other left off, but I feel all movies (even sequels) should stand a little on their own and this just kind of drops you in the middle of it with no real explanation. For someone who hasn't seen the first one you might be a little confused, and by the end of the movie you might be asleep. The family that the movie focuses on was not in the first one, and the "new reason" for another outbreak is not very well written. The chemistry between the characters wasn't really smooth, and it seemed like some of them struggled with the lines, or the scenes. I just don't think this one lived up to the franchise.

Overall Rating: 2 Stars (out of 5). Re-Watch Value: Low to None (If you must just rent it).

Trivia: Extensive filming of a "US Army Camp / Base" took place during the weekend of 21st/22nd October 2006 in the courtyard outside the Citypoint Building, Ropemaker Street, London EC2. A large number of tents with US flags, cast in military dress and vehicles were in place. Additionally access to the sub-floor car park area appears to have been given to shoot an underground scene.
